FUN and TRACK

2 part question
Why is it that no one here talks about Ga Tech as being a school with a lot fun. All yall say it is stressful but how do most students have fun around there. How far away is like dtown ATL.

ANYYALL Know what type of times it takes to run on the track team. sub 4:30s miles.

From east campus: Walk east across I-85. Walk south on Spring Street for 10 minutes. You're in the middle of the city. Technically GT is within city limits and though its close to all of those skyscrapers, it is actually Midtown. I think North Avenue is the unofficial divider between downtown and midtown. GT is very close to downtown, and there's always some fun in the city.

Actually, midtown is considered anything inside 285. The skylines in the perimeter are divided like so: Buckhead, Sandy Springs/Northsprings, Vinings/SE Cobb, Downtown, Uptown, "Midtown" which is vague I know, and then there's the "Southside" which I just call the ghetto, LOL.

running, I seriously doubt places like Decatur, Chamblee, or Doraville can be considered Midtown Atlanta. Or even College Park- that's midtown? "Midtown" metropolitan Atlanta maybe, since that would make Duluth and Suwanee uptown, but Atlanta? Those places are itp but they're not even in the city of Atlanta!

Sandy Springs, North Springs, and Dunwoody aren't even in the Perimter..unless I have horrible direction skills. I'm pretty sure the Marta stations for all three are otp. I guess you're talking Midtown Metro-area and I'm more hooked on Midtown Atlanta, since that's what makes the most sense!

Duluth and Suwanee aren't uptown... they're not even in the perimeter. They're "Northeast Metro".

Sandy Springs is bordering 285 inside and outside, because it's near where 285 & 400 intersect and where it all of a sudden becomes a bunch of office complexes. I never said anything about Dunwoody. And, I do believe the MARTA station is ITP in Sandy Springs, because it's on the side of 285. http://www.northmetro100.org/images/adamsville.gif

I actually would consider Decatur MT because of the similarities of the City of Atlanta and it.

Anyway, we call it midtown because when people are buying homes, they consider anything in the Perimeter "midtown" and anything outside "the suburbs". It may be more of a real estate thing.

MY dad used to work in one of those office complexes in Sandy Springs, it's a pretty fun place but not really midtown. And I know you said nothing about Dunwoody, I was just working my way north on the MARTA line ;). It's Dunwoody>Sandy Springs>North Springs, and I believe all three stations are otp. Though Dunwoody may be RIGHT on it. Sandy Springs is definitely otp since it's pretty much north Fulton County. Your map is more like where six flags and the HE Holmes MARTA station is; I've never heard of adamsville! But then again, I'm probably not too aware of west atlanta.

It probably is a real estate term. I haven't moved in over a decade, so I wouldn't know, but I'm pretty sure giving directions and telling people Decatur is in midtown is a bit of a faux pas or misleading at the bare minimum. Most people (once again, taht I know) think of Boa, Tech, Little 5 Points, Peachtree St., etc. Decatur's pretty east of Atlanta, though you'd think Briarcliff and Lavista looks just like a city street.

God, I'm arguing Atlanta geography. This is something kinda new for me. It's all good either way; our diplomas will still read the same thing no matter where the school actually is :D.

LOL. Well, GATech is Downtown, either way, HAHA

about the partying... if you like to party and look for it the parties are suppose to be awesome.. my hairdresser told me the most fun she has ever had was at ga tech parties, but as u no there are lots of reallly smart dorky ppl that dont party so it really depends on who you ask

"Anyway, we call it midtown because when people are buying homes, they consider anything in the Perimeter "midtown" and anything outside "the suburbs". It may be more of a real estate thing." ...hardly.

If one was getting housing inside the perimiter in Midtown they would be looking north of downtown, south of Buckhead and west of Virginia Highlands. Midtown is never used as a generic "inside the perimeter"

^Yes, it is.

runningncircles1, you have no clue what you are talking about. "Midtown" is a very specific district within the city of Atlanta. Tech's campus is pretty much the west end of Midtown. Midtown extends 5 or so miles east until it pretty much becomes the Virginia Highlands area. You are absolutely clueless if you think midtown (in any sense of the word) is the area within 285. That is simply called "within the perimeter" and no other district name. The perimeter has a diameter of roughly 30 miles! There is certainly no point in arguing whether the west end of Midtown ends at the interstate, Northside, or Howell Mill; but to say that over 400 square miles of the state is considered "Midtown" is downright foolish...

Get off my ass! That's how they referred to it at the realty office :(

Why do you have to be such an arse about it?

Anyway, the whole Midtown debate is over. Let's think what we want of it, and answer this lady's (or gentleman's) question of social life at tech.

By arguing over Atlanta's geography, I'm sure we've given a negative image to that social life.

Actually, your comment of the area within the perimeter being called midtown misrepresents the cultural area of Tech. Midtown has its own character and social scene. To liken the cultural aspects of Midtown, to say... Marietta is completely unfair.

To answer the OP's question: Georgia Tech can be considered right in the heart of Atlanta. It is in a district called Midtown, which, as the name represents, is near the center (geographically speaking) of Atlanta. It is as close to the "city" as you can get while still having a self-contained campus. The only way you could get any closer to the city would be a school like Georgia State University, which is amongst other city buildings.

You will have no problem finding things to do within Atlanta. Unfortunately, Atlanta is not pedestrian friendly, so you will still need to drive just about everywhere, but you really couldn't get much closer to the city of Atlanta. You will see skyscrapers from just about every part of campus.

And, runningncircles1, you need to find another realtor... ;) maybe someone who knows their Atlanta geography a little better...

I asked about that today. Turns out it's just for filing purposes. They have files there from when they started (in the 80s) when basically people moved OUT of midtown so they grouped everything ITP in "midtown" to save space, soooo yeah. MY BAD!

Where is Buckhead? Is that a street?

How do students get there? (walking, GT trolley, car?)

a car is the only way

You can take MARTA... I'm not sure if the train goes by there or if it's a bus. But, I do remember seeing MARTA signs around Lenox and Phipps. Though, the malls are the only places I remember seeing signs for MARTA, so I'm not sure about the rest of Buckhead.
