Fun minors?

Title says it all.
I find the thought of just being a ME major rather dreadful. So it leads me to ask, what are some fun minors? By fun, I mean stuff along the lines of astronomy, astrophysics, languages, religion, ect..
All suggestions will be taken under consideration.

Thanks.

If I recall, I don’t think engineers can have minors?

We can’t double major.

Engineers can have minors, just not engineering minors. As far as fun goes, look at the requirements for the minors and see what classes you can take to fulfill them and see what classes look fun. I decided to minor in psychology for fun, but that’s just me. I find it interesting.

Why minor at all? Serves no purpose unless you were going to take those classes anyway.

They don’t show up on your diploma and I don’t think it’s even worthy of putting it in one’s r

^For fun I’m guessing. But with the completion of my science education minor, I can get a master’s of education and teaching credentials in a year and a half at UCSD’s education graduate school. And with the psychology classes, it’s possible for me to teach psychology at a high school.

I’m doing a PofC (which I guess is sorta like a minor? For Warren GE requirements) in Music. I’m also doing a minor in computer science in lieu of a PofC since it’s non contiguous with my major, and I think I’ll find it interesting.

@ Oyama: I’m doing it for the fun. I am not doing it for any sort of merit apart from self merit… if that makes any sense.
@ KingsElite: Psychology was decent. Teaching at a HS level sounds dreadful.
@ Adamantoise: Music sounds like it would be interesting, but it’s not to my liking. CS was dreadful, I loathe being in front of a computer for more than 2 ~ 3 hours.

Thanks for the input.

^Fair enough. There are plenty of jobs that seem dreadful to some but exciting to others.

I did not mean to sound rude in anyway.

^I know, I’m just saying I think it’s exciting. For example, I think being a surgeon would be a horrifying job but there are plenty of people who would love it. I’m not saying it’s a bad job, I just wouldn’t like it.

I find that so ironically hilarious. I’m actually planning on becoming a surgeon. Best of luck to both of us.

^Ha ha. And I was wondering “I wonder what Crosstica wants to do”. I guess you telepathically spoke to my subconscious. But really, that’s the example I always use. Cutting people open is not for me. :)

I guess I wasn’t as clear as I thought – I was suggesting that one just take a variety of classes that sound interesting, and if they happen to form a minor, go for it. Otherwise, you might be taking 1-2 classes that you genuinely like and 5-7 that you don’t. If you look through my transcript, I was halfway done with around 3 or 4 minors had I continued (I really sampled a lot of different classes from the social sciences), but decided not to pursue them since I already took the classes I wanted to take.

I minor in Education or in Accounting or whatever is the same as taking the requisite amount of relevant classes and the title, “Minor,” doesn’t add any exclusive utility with it besides having the title for the sake of the title. If you’re fairly interested in getting a “liberal arts education”, just take classes that interest you regardless of what department they’re in and what minors the classes satisfy. If I only pidgeonholed myself to take classes that only satisfied particular minors, my college experience wouldn’t have been nearly as fun or enriching.

Hope that helps clarify what I was trying to say.

@ Oyama: Yeah it did. Your recommendation is solid, I think I will do what you suggest.

@Oyama

I don’t disagree with you. It’s for that reason I decided not to triple minor with music as well. I was going to do it because I thought that I had to take six classes from one department so I thought I might as well just make it seven with the minor. I later was in academic advising asking about the logistics of triple minor and they actually showed me that I was allowed to mix and match between departments for my Warren GEs. So now I will be taking other classes that I want to satisfy that. But, my other two minors kind of actually mean something.

What are some fun classes to cover for upper division ge?

$KingsElite$, I know what you mean. I ended up getting a double minor mainly because I was satisfying the breadth anyway, so I just took an extra class or two to complete them (Bio and Spanish). In the end, it didn’t matter that I did either since my graduate degree isn’t related to either, but for a while I was either considering working in industry where Spanish would have been a great signal that I’m bilingual and Bio when I was considering a Ph.D. in Behavioral Neuroscience.

But yeah, for me, I wouldn’t bother setting out to complete a minor for the sake of completing a minor. Definitely–if you’re already planning on taking the majority of classes fulfilling a minor–get one then.
