Is anyone contemplating a minor and in what? Are they even ever particularly useful or impressive on future graduate/job applications? Or are double majors looked at more respectfully than minors?

I need to come up with 20 units of classes outside of my major so I was thinking about this...

Honestly you don’t have to specifically do a minor or double major. Remember that going to school is to learn and just finishing up all your major requirements. So take classes that you are interested in. Or take the easy route by either taking easy A classes or getting units for research.

Since you are majoring in Chem Bio, I would consider molecular toxicology as a minor.

Well I’m planning to minor instead of double major. From what I hear from counselors and such, there isn’t some huge benefit to double majoring unless you plan on doing something very specific or would like to have more options when applying to grad school. For me, the extra costs and likely extra couple of quarters don’t warrant me waiting to graduate.
I’m an anthropology major and am considering a minor in: 1. Museum Studies 2. Art history or 3. Film/Media studies at UCLA (regardless of my username)…

I * might* do a minor. I’m thinking about minoring in Chemistry, Math, Comparative Lit, English, Quantitative Biology or Technology Management. Obviously, I don’t really know what I want to minor in. lol :-)

I’m doing a Physics major with a minor in Cognitive Science. I wanted to double major in those topics but the upper division GE requirements killed off that idea. In addition to these, I have a Computer Science AS and Math AS from CCC so I plan on going into graduate school in AI/robotics development.

haha yeah I have 120+ semester units already so I’m all “general education”-ed out but I don’t know what to do either. I was thinking about a minor in math (helpful & my strongest subject), linguistics (interesting & gives me some outside science education for grad school), or public policy (interest in polysci but they don’t offer a minor). I would need 5/6/5 classes to complete these. Toxicology seems okay but I only need 5 more courses to get a double major in MCB (Molecular Cell Bio) in Immunology which is similar to what I would like to go to grad school for. I wouldn’t consider a minor or double major but my major doesn’t offer Summer classes and I only have 6 credits of classes for my Spring and senior Fall semester (and I need to be full time).

I think it’s obvious that a minor that is very different from your major can show that you have well rounded interests but a minor in a comparable discipline can signify a sincere dedication to the subject. It’s hard to choose because there are a bunch of things I’d be interested in learning about but I think it makes more sense to focus on one.

Did your CC allow you to declare 2 Associate’s degrees? I have one in Chemistry but I wasn’t allowed more than that even though I had the classes.

Wow, you can only get one degree from your CC? There were tons of people with multiple degrees at our graduation yesterday, including two guys who were receiving 7 degrees.

I’m thinking about minoring in social thought, labor studies, or the history of science and medicine at UCLA…

My professor( who did his poli sci PHD from UCLA and he was also a big pre-law advisor back in his east coast days) does not recommend doing a minor. Unless it is another layer of a “hard skill” like math or accounting, it will rarely improve your job chances…he did mention foreign languages are very smart to minor in though…

If you are going to go an extra mile for a minor or major, you should just change your major to chemical engineering. That would make it worth the extra work.

Other than that I would just fill the extra units with take easy A class / research units and concentrate on getting into to med/dental/pharm etc. school.

@iTransfer I did consider this but I really don’t think I would do well in that major. I have zero interest in most of the classes I’d have to take and I’m really good with Bio and Chem and not so hot in Physics or Engineering type classes. I think ChemEng is a way better major overall especially for finding a job after college but all the work doesn’t seem necessary if my ultimate goal is to go to grad school I actually don’t want to go to med/dental/or pharm school though. I’d like to go get my Masters in Virology or something related (Immunology based) so perhaps more research experience would better prep me for that than a minor. But thank you for the advice. I still have some time to take all my options into consideration.

@Indie yeah I wasn’t able to find out any more information but everyone I know that put in their request for their AS/AA only did it for one. I wonder if I can just put in another request to get another degree at the end of Fall, but I’m not sure how that would work since I won’t be attending the CC I guess I don’t really need it but if I already technically earned it, I might as well get what I can.

@jg If I wasn’t a science major, I contemplated chosing polysci as my major. I actually took the pol sci pre-req classes at my CC but I didn’t want to take so many history classes :/

@zen I also thought about a minor in Spanish. My dad is from Brazil (where I might end up living in the future) and I had wanted to take Portuguese but my CC didn’t offer it. I don’t think I’d personally have the work ethic to learn a harder language though lol.

I like Chemistry and pchem doesn’t really deter me. I really wanted a chemistry based background for biochem rather than the MCB version since my graduate school work (hopefully) will be a bit more bio - broader knowledge base. Since UCB has one of the best graduate Chemistry departments in the country, I thought that the undergrad dept would probably reflect that and that I might have more access to professors/research/etc since the CoC is so small. Honestly, I have no idea if any of this will pan out but I’m happy with my decision to apply to Chem Bio rather than MCB.

Oh and more importantly, I thought that I wouldn’t be able to apply to L&S because I had 92 transferable units and they set a cap. But then after looking over the transferable credit guidelines, I realized I still would have been okay but it was probably safer to apply to CoC. Additionally, I needed to complete 2 classes to fulfill Bio 1A and I only took one (though I did finish 1B) but I had basically all of the pre-reqs/reqs done for Chem Bio.

I’ve been considering a Public Policy minor through the Goldman School at Cal. Or, maybe something generic like Sociology, then get an MPP after I graduate. Major is poli sci.

From what I understand, you are a Political Science major… having that an a minor in TV or Digital Media might be relevant if your goal is to be on TV or as a PR representative.
