So I got accepted into the National Student Leadership Conference for the Law and Advocacy Program this summer. The problem? I have to have $3000 dollars by May 2nd. I have applied for a scholarship from the program, but generally they only give you between $250-$750. Right now I have only raised $110... I have been going to neighborhood businesses asking for donations, but I haven't been doing too well. I also plan on hosting a car wash and several yard sales to help rake in the funds. I need some advice, does anyone have any experience with fundraising for this much money? I'm running out of time and ideas, so any tips or suggestions that you may have would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Bump! 10char

It is spring, neighbors might want help with yardwork or window washing… put together a flyer for that. If you have stuff to sell, yard sale/garage sale/Craigslist is a good option. You might ask if you can borrow from your parents and pay them back over the summer.

But just asking… are you sure it is worthwhile to give up a whole summer’s worth of earnings for this one program? Presumably you will need money for college, and if you are in a situation where your family can’t pay for this program, you likely will be scrambling for college funds. I think I can see what you are hoping for in college acceptance from your screen name, but that is a huge crapshoot to assume it will happen (and if you can’t plan well enough to sign up for a program you can afford for the summer, I kind of wonder if you have what it takes to get to your college goal…).

Ebay, bake sale, ask your church/temple/etc.

Get a job? That might be a bit time-intensive, but should help.

intparent: Thanks for the ideas! I already plan on having several yard sales, and the yardwork is a great idea. As for my parents, they are only going to be able to contribute a small portion of the money I need.
I see where you’re coming from, but this program is something I really want to do. As for planning well enough for a program I can afford, I have yet to find a law program that I can attend that has a considerably lower price. I did some research and this program is supposed to be a wonderful experience, the only ones that looked better were the $10,000 programs at places like Harvard and Brown. Maybe I’m looking in the wrong places… And yes, it is my dream to attend Harvard, but I know that more than likely I won’t get there because of financial reasons. Unless I am able to obtain a substantial scholarship from them, Harvard is out of the picture. My ultimate goal is to go there for law school anyways, so I will hopefully have more time to get a job and save money in order to attend then.

chaseholl: The bake sale sounds like a wonderful idea, and I’m trying to sell stuff on ebay as well. As for the job, I just turned 15 in December, and while I would love to get a job, it’s going to be really hard because I am involved in tons of school activities and clubs that meet after school. I’m not sure if I should give some up in order to get a job, or just keep things the way they are. Not only that, but I’m always really busy in the summer as well… I really don’t know what I should do about that situation.
