S accepted to Furman and High Point and plans on studying business. Which school? Visiting both in a couple of weeks. Any thoughts/opinions appreciated.

Furman is a well-regarded school.

Unless there is a significant difference in aid, Furman.

No difference in aid at all. Only concern is Furman has reputation as being religious and S is decidedly not!

Glad you will be able to visit. High Point has become known in our area as a school for affluent kids who don’t have the scores & grades to get into more selective schools like Elon or Wake Forest. Lots of kids from mid-Atlantic states who like the warmer weather, so not just a southern student body. The current president has a marketing background and has been very successful at attracting money and attention to the school. HPU forum on CC is an interesting place – critics seem to find the school cult-like, which strikes me as unfair.

I take rankings with a very large grain of salt, but IIRC Furman is generally ranked higher. Please correct me if I’m wrong. You may want to look at the Common Data Set for both schools.

Assume you’ve seen the CC thread on religion at Furman? May be helpful if that’s a concern for your S.

Furman is much, much better than High Point academically in a way that’s hard to overemphasized
However for a child who’s not religious (or even -gasp- agnostic or atheist) it may be a bad fit. I’d still choose Furman, but are these the only two choices for your child?

S wait listed at Elon. They took many students from surrounding private schools and rejected or wait listed the students from the public schools with higher SAT’s and GPA . S wants to be south and those schools are the ones he applied to. He has acceptances from Schools in the Northeast but heart wants to be south.

You will not need to asks this question after you visit. Furman and HPU couldn’t be more different!
