Furman's initials??

Furman Univesity has a picture posted on their FB page showing several students, with their backs to the camera wearing their FU t-shirts, with the GIANT letters FU on them. I had wondered what Furman did about those initials. I thought maybe they just avoided using them, and just used the whole name of the school on t-shirts, etc. I'm just curious if anyone has thoughts about displaying the initials on offical t shirts and things. I don't think there is anything wrong with it....they ARE their initials after all, but I don't think I'd want to walk around wearing the giant letters FU on my back, especially if I was not near Furman University. That might get misconstrued on visits elsewhere! lol

I'm just curious about others' reactions on this...not lobbying for the school to stop using their own initials. ;-)

It's just a time when so many people put intentionally offensive things on t shirts and bumper stickers. I am always taken somewhat aback at some of the rude bumper stickers...really...That's what you want to say to the whole world all the time?

I understand what you are saying but do you feel the same about Boise State (BS) or South Carolina (Go **, ,) to name only a few? I think it is refreshing that a university (albeit private) doesn’t have an issue with it in this day and age of everyone trying so hard to be so PC.

Wow, it wouldn’t even let me spell it. The * words rhyme with socks (i.e. replace the ‘s’ with a ‘c’).

LOL Well, I don’t have an issue with it…just wondered about it. Yes, I think if I saw someone wearing a t shirt that just said BS, or just said the South Carolina thing, unless I was in the vicinity of those colleges, it would make me wonder what the message was. The t shirt might have the name of the school on the front, so if the person turns around, it would be clear, but if someone was behind them at the mall, in another town, with no context available, I think it could be misconstrued. It certainly wouldn’t keep me from attending the school, but might affect my choice of t shirts at the bookstore. ;-)

So, back in the 1980s, the President of the University was John E. Johns (yes, his parents either had a bad sense of humor or had an incredible lack of creativity when it came to names). Anyway, he was a excellent university president, and he managed to run a top-notch elite regional liberal arts college while simultaneously keeping the South Carolina Baptist Convention (with which Furman was affiliated at the time) in check. Dr. Johns always led a cheer at every home football game, usually in the 3rd quarter. When the “spirit moved” the student section, they would call out, “Dr. Johns, come on down.” To great and continuous applause, he would come down from his seat up several sections above the bulk of the crowd and lead the home fans in a cheer across the football field to where the other team and its fans were seated: “F.U. one time!” … to which the students and other fans would reply LOUDLY, [“F.U. one time!”] “F.U. two times!” [“F.U. two times!”] “F.U. three times!” [“F.U. three times!”] “F.U. AAAAALLLLLL the time!” [“F.U. AAAAALLLLLL the time!”]

Hey… it’s just the initials of the university, right? Like FSU or BYU or UT…

Daughter is at Furman and I am a SC grad so awkwardness of the FU and Go C@&s T-shirts and hats etc… has come to mind occasional. We and our D are fairly conservative so we had the same thought initially. The students still do that chant at football games. She is a sophomore now and we have not thought of it since the first week she arrived at Furman. I think your right in that I where my Go C@$s hat to Carolina games but not around here. Same with D, she wears the full Furman name T-shirts away from campus. I guess thinking of it philosophically, I would much rather the students where and FU t-shirt but conduct themselves as ladies and gentleman than wear a UGA, USC or other T-shirt and act like barbarians. Lol

We are from the west coast so we have not purchased a shirt with only the initials. We go for the whole name on apparel! Younger sibling wanted to buy an FU shirt so she could wear it at home for shock value. No go kiddo! My D, now a soph., does have an FU shirt but tends to wear other ones while at home. Not sure if this is a purposeful move on her part.
