Futrall or Humphreys

I am going to be a Freshman in the fall of 2013. I am planning on going through rush, also.

I really don’t know what dorm I want to stay in but after looking at some things I am thinking it will be between Furtrall or Humphreys.
In y’all’s opinions, which one do you prefer?
How far away are they from food or general areas on campus?
I would like co-ed and I know they both are. What are they near by?
And what is the pricing for both of them? Or which one is more expensive?

Please let me know your thoughts.

Thank you!

Hi! I’m a freshman at the UofA right now, and I can say that, without a doubt, Humphreys would be the best! Keep in mind, there’s nothing wrong with Futrall; it’s close to the Walmart on campus, right beside the campus bookstore, right across from Northwest Quads dining hall, but it’s on the outskirts of campus, almost.

I live in Yocum (which is considered the sister dorm to Humphreys), and it’s right in the middle campus. Humphreys is right beside Brough Commons (the most frequented dining hall on campus), it’s right near where most of your classes will be (Business Building, Kimpel Hall (English/Foreign Language building), and not a far walk from the others.

Most of my friends live in Humphreys, and the dorm is VERY friendly. It has a long-standing history of being really open and it’s easy to make friends if you live there. One of my friend’s had a birthday party, and the entire 9th floor threw her a birthday party! I love going over there and hanging out with everyone.

The Walmart on campus is about a 10 minute walk from Humphreys. Same for NW Quad dining hall, but the Union is only about 3-5 minutes away. (Less depending on how fast you walk, traffic on sidewalks, etc.)

In terms of pricing, Humphreys is the cheapest. It has been this way for a long time, because it used to not have air conditioning (it does now!), so it was offered at a lower price. (Here’s a link to all of the rates for the 2012-13 year: [University Housing, Housing & Dining Rates](http://housing.uark.edu/rates.php))

I’ve been inside Futrall a few times, and it’s also very nice! You would enjoy either dorm, I imagine, but Humphreys is where everyone goes to have a good time. Keep your door open, and people will walk by and strike up a conversation with you. It’s so fun!

Good luck on your decision, and WPS!

I’m having the same dilemma! Futrall is probably my top choice because it’s next to the sorority houses and it’s by the Quads dining hall, which I LOVE. But the friendly atmosphere of Humphreys sounds amazing… Does anyone know if Humphreys, or any of the other dorms for that matter, have the basement thing with the kitchen where you can cook like Futrall has?

Go with Futrall. It is at a more convenient location of the campus, and is not to shabby on the inside either.

What are the chances of getting into the dorm I want? Will it be difficult since it’s first come first serve?

Is Futrall as friendly as Humphreys sounds?
And is Yocum a dorm just for honors college?

Also,
are there more Freshmen in Humphreys? Because on the website it is for all students and I am wonder how much of each grade live there?
Thank you!

I mean Pomfret for the honors dorm, not Yocum.

Pomfret isn’t just an honors dorm; it has an ‘honors wing’ and then the there are non-honors sections of it (although it’s at the bottom of a huge hill which is killer to walk up to classes according to my friends down there).

Humphrey’s may have a reputation for being really friendly but that is lingering from the no-air condition days and I’d say it varies by who ends up on your floor. When I was living there I didn’t feel like it was all that friendly, so take don’t expect bliss especially if they are still doing construction around. Also, the walls are thin if anyone is deciding to stumble down the hall drunk or hang out in the hallway in Humphrey you will know. It’s difficult to find a quiet place to study in Humphrey’s because the sound just bounces around in all of the main areas. Also, you may be able to hear the drunk party goers yelling from 6+ floors below you at night.

Humphrey’s does seem to have a lot of freshman because it’s a large dorm, and the one of the last ones usually picked, so many freshman end up there when they didn’t have an option to pick a room. You certainly won’t be over-run with upperclassmen there but there are a number of them.

Humphrey’s is more centered for most classes, but I’d say Futrall is near the best food (and even if you decide you want something near Humphrey’s it’s not as bad to walk down a hill towards food instead of up a hill). Futrall is near the on-campus Walmart, the bookstore, Subway, NW Quad dining hall, and a yogurt place. It’s also across the street pretty much from a bus stop that would take you towards class buildings. The Union is between Humphrey’s and Futrall, although probably a bit closer to Futrall.

Out of the two, I’d say go with Futrall if you can.

Natalie: I don’t know about entire kitchen’s but Humphrey’s has a tiny kitchen on the entry floor that’s locked to use, and I know at least one of the new halls that will be opening up (Hotz or Founders) is going to have a kitchen, and Gibson has a kitchen near their living room area, and I want to say that Reid might…

Also, it really does depend on when your application and housing material went through as to how good of a shot you have of getting your preferred dorm. I’d say if you’re going with Futrall you will have a much better shot than getting into dorms like Maple Hill or Reid, but maybe not as likely as ending up in Yocum or Humphrey. (Again, it all depends on the date you got all the material done by, so the earlier you did/do the better shot you have at getting your first or second choice dorm.)
Good luck!
