Future Question

Hey, I'm new to the forums so I apologize for the dumb question I'm about to ask. I live in NY and I am going to be graduating 2011(Senior right now). I have a interest in business field but my parents are concerned that by the time i graduate there would be not a lot of jobs available or anything. I'm here to get advice from anyone on what they think about the job availability for the future.

Thanks

Your question is to broad. What kind of business?

I can tell you one thing though, your parents have no idea what they’re talking about. They cannot predict what the job market will be like in 4 years and they shouldn’t try to.

I’m not sure I understand how your parents’ concerns relate to college. No one knows how the job market is going to be four years from now - so they are saying you shouldn’t go to college because you might still not get a better job with a degree (opposed to just a high school diploma)…?

They don’t want me to go into any field of business. They are more towards science field. Medical and what not. But i oppose that, its just a thing I’m not interested in. The thing i mean by business is like accounting or anything. I got to do more research so I’m not sure yet.

Like serious and I both said nobody knows what the job market will be like.

I’m guessing your parents are foreign? Medical school is a huge commitment and if you’re not interested than you shouldn’t do it.

Look up BLS.gov. It is the Bureau of Labor Statistics. It is a website where the government posts statistics on where they believe the job market is going. Look up things like accountant, system analyst, financial analyst, etc and show it to your parents.

Without business there won’t be much of anything. Your parents aren’t the brightest folks out there.

Maybe they think you should specialize in a field that is recession proof. Few fields are, but health care is probably one of them. So become a doctor, you’ll be fine.

Many (most) business are cyclical. There are few businesses that stay on the top of the heap for a long period of time. It doesn’t mean going into business is bad, it’s just more exposed to swings in the economy.

Your parents (and situation) are alot like mine. My parents were both immigrants, and now are doctors. Actually, all my uncles and aunts are either doctors or engineers or lawyers. Of course, I get constant pressure to become one of those. When I tell them, " I want to do accounting or finance", they laugh and tell me to get a “real profession.” For them, it’s all about the Benjamins.

At first it was hard to go against the grain, but my mom has accepted it (my dad will come around one day too), and I have realized that a happy CPA-MBA who had to wait 5-10 yrs for the six figures is better than a soulless zombie MD who spent an extra 7 yrs in school for something he has no passion for. And it’s not like your trying to major in Art History or something; accounting is a very good major that brings in 45K right off the bat and 50-55K with a Masters.

What your parents said is totally false. They’re just trying to scare you into choosing medicine/engineering etc because those are the only jobs they consider “real jobs.” As much as I love my parents, I feel like doctors look down on others because they chose different paths.

^ good post. Some people, especially older generations, think anything other than a doctor or a lawyer is not going to make you any money. in reality, the debts for doctors coming out of school, especially if they specialize, are so ridiculous it takes a little while for your salary to actually go into your pocket. lawyers, they have the large debt, and a ton of them are jobless because there are too many lawyers for the amount of jobs open. CPAs that either stay with big firms for a while, open their own office, or take high positions in large private businesses can rake in substantial amounts of money a year. plus you’re not spending 7 years in school post grad. you’re making money in that time. nothing wrong with accounting or finance

Thanks for the feedback guys. I appreciate it. Your correct plscatamacchia, my parents are foreign haha, and I will be going on that website and showing it to them soon. Thanks. FutureVpFinance, that’s really good information, I can use that to convince my parents.
