We live right outside of Houston, Texas and LSU is in my son's top 2 schools. However, he knows no one else attending. I contacted the Houston-based admissions person and she told me this.

"Of the students attending LSU each fall, approximately 15% are from a state outside of Louisiana. Over 11% of those students came to us from Texas accounting for well over half of our out of state students. Of the Texas students attending LSU last fall, over half were from the Houston area."

She also said they typically get 15-30 applications from my son's high school (which is large). So, I'm posting just to see if any of the lurkers here are also Texans. I have already found one really nice person, but I'm sure there are others. So check in if you're here.

Maybe there can be some car-pooling for long weekends in our future!

To the OP, just wondering but is it 11% of all students who are from Texas for 11% of out of state students? If so, that would be 11% of 15%, which would only be 1.65% of total students.

It seemed like everyone in my orientation group this summer hailed from the Lone Star state- at least half. These were all students wishing to study business (the groups were based on major). Just wondering, but why is LSU so attractive to Texas students?

My husband & I are both LSU alums and from the time my kids could talk they could yell ‘Geaux Tigers’. If you have a decent ACT score the scholarships for OOS kids are fabulous. I’m guessing that’s a big draw!

mypsych97, which school are you from? My son will be a senior at Austin in FBISD. While we were touring we ran into a football player from Clements who was hoping to attend also.

Sleepy, I think she meant 11 of the 15 percent were from Texas. Which makes sense considering the top 10% rule pushing many awesome students away from UT.

I had emailed her originally to ask if there were any events in Houston for kids interested in LSU, but I guess there weren’t since she didn’t mention any in her reply.

My daughters have gone to Clements HS. LSU is great for OOS students. My daughter who had LSU second to UT was granted a scholarship to LSU along with entry into the Honors College. The cool thing about LSU and I guess many state of La schools is that being given an OOS scholarship results in a waiver of OOS tuition. It would have only cost us room and board to send her to LSU as a result. A great option—we are talking to our youngest about the advantages of LSU.

My daughter is definitely interested in LSU. She’ll be graduating from Frisco ISD next spring. We’ll see what they offer, but it definitely looks good :-)

If you have at least a 3.0 and a 1250 composite you can have the non resident fee waved making it about 15 a year total, 5grand cheaper than a&m

I’m not from TX “from TN,” and I couldn’t be more pumped up to attend LSU. i’m going for petroleum engineering, and LSU was the only school I applied to. lol so it’s been a pretty stress free senior year as you could imagine…

BTW: I also got out-of-state tuition waived

We are from the Houston area (Katy ISD) and my son has been accepted to LSU for Fall 2010. Fortunately his test scores were high enough for him to be awarded out-of-state and tuition exemption as well as an on-campus job that pays up to $1500 per year.

This is my second go-round with the college process and I have found that most Texas schools not only have to abide by the 10% rule but also place other restrictions on scholarship awards. For example, some schools will place a top 25% of class rule on many of their merit based scholarships. So, even if you score 1300+ on SAT you still have to be in top 25%. For my son’s school that generally means a GPA at 4.0 or above. LSU does not consider class rank (as far as I know) but instead uses SAT and ACT scores. (I’m sure you probably need a decent GPA but you likely have that if you are competitive for scholarships.)

My son is also waiting to hear if he will get an appointment to West Point so he may end up a Black Knight instead of a Tiger come fall.

Several of my older son’s friends (from Katy ISD) will be going to LSU this fall. Many others are already there. My son will be heading north (Penn State), but my younger son - a junior - has his sights on LSU.
