Future veteran looking to transfer AA to out of state school

Hello,
I have so many different questions I guess I don’t know where to begin. Here are some of my quick stats

Florida resident
Florida International University for 1.5 semester did horrible.
Took a year off
Florida CC GPA: 2.7 (graduated with an AA in English)
Joined the military directly after CC.
Currently active duty military, one year left on contract.
First generation “American”, I am hispanic
First generation college student
Have about 70 college credits.

Transfer goals: any urban set college/university. I’m stationed right in an urban area right now and it’s exactly what I want in life.
UW-Seattle is the dream, but looking at my GPA, I’m thinking that won’t happen.

I’m just curious where I can expect to be transfer accepted in Fall 2019.

I have money saved up, and GI Bill will pay a good amount in housing assistance, so City cost of living doesn’t bother me.

I guess my questions would be: will my 2.7 gpa hurt me?
Will having gone to two schools already hurt me?
Will bring out of state resident and transfer severely limit my chances at any school I might want?

Edit: in case my gpa is too low and I don’t have enough pre reqs, is transferring to a community college in the city/state of my choice and then transferring to a state university after a viable path?
Will having gone to 4 different schools to get a bachelors look bad?

Contact the Veteran’s advisor at UW and ask about your specific situation. In fact, for every university you look at, start woth the Veteran’s advisor. They are the experts at helping students like you sort through everything.

Your old grades will hurt you, yes. But you also are older, wiser, and more focused. That can make a big difference for you.

Attending multiple colleges and universities won’t matter in and of itself. In the long run, what matters is where you do graduate.

Being an OOS resident is usally a good thing, because you are expected to pay more money. However, as a veteran, you fall into your own special category. Which is why you need to communicate with the Veteran’s advisor.

Thank you for the reply. I guess I will have to talk to UW. I would definitely prefer starting back there than having to transfer to another school.

Its currently a year and a half before Fall 2019. Is this too far in advance to speak to an advisor?

It is not too early, especially given your complicated situation. You have a lot of information to collect and sort through.

Wishing you all the best!

Check out: service2school – you’re exactly who they help for FREE - alternatively DM me here as I have close ties to the org and know the transfer game well

@thestandard - Has the Veterans Forum here been useful for you? It isn’t as active as a lot of the other forums. http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/veterans/ In the past I’ve referred veterans there, but if it is faster for them to find what they need in other forums, I’d like to know.

@happymomof1 I’d highly encourage you to send veterans to service2school.org – the group is a completely free non profit of veterans helping other veterans navigate this process. Veterans are such a niche group with such low volume that the forums here tend to be rather dormant. Much of my initial learning here came from the general transfer forums, and little to none from the veterans subsection. I’d say “non-trad” had the most value in so far as sharing knowledge of some of the non-traditional programs at Yale, Penn, Columbia etc, but the aforementioned group cuts to the chase immediately as all mentors have been through the process already.

Appreciate you helping guide the veteran community to the appropriate resources they need!

@thestandard - Will do! Thanks for that info.
