I was wondering what my chances are at McGill. My SAT scores all make the cutoffs, some by a fairly large margin, but I'm worried about both my unweighted gpa and my status as an American citizen (I heard only a very small percentage of McGill students are from the U.S.).

My SAT scores are:
800 SAT I Math
680 SAT I Verbal
(1480 total)

800 SAT II Math IIC
770 SAT II Physics
720 SAT II Writing

My unweighted gpa is 3.53, but my class rank is in the top 7% and I took the most rigorous course load my school has.

I have pretty good EC's, but I think that it's mostly a numbers game at McGill.

Will they look at my unweighted gpa and reject me, or will they focus more on my class rank and standardized test scores? How difficult will it be for a U.S. citizen with my numbers to get admitted?

They ask for class rank along with GPA--don't worry, they do take into account rigors of course load (they will look at your transcript as well as wanting to know what classes you're taking senior year).

With your stats I'd think it would be amazing if you didn't get in. Your chances are wonderful.

I also have a friend who is interested in McGill. His stats are similar to mine but a little worse. I was wondering if he stands a chance at mcgill too.

His SAT scores are:
750 Verbal
720 Math
(1470 total)

His SAT II scores are:
700 writing
690 math IIc
690 US History
670 Chemistry

GPA about 3.3 but definitely higher factoring second term of senior year. He takes 6 AP classes this year, 8 over the course of high school, and has been taking the most rigorous courses the school has to offer.

He got a D in geometry sophomore year but since then his math grades have been fine and hes a mostly A, some B student.

Extracurricular activities are good.

will they automatically reject him because of the D or will they look a lot also at SAT scores and most recent grades?

Hi, first post here, I would like to add in a question about my own chances of admission, I've sent in an application but I'm very skeptical that I will make it through...

US high school
2.9unweighted (~3.45 weighted) gpa due to doing absolutely nothing in my period of depression (They had an option for extenuating circumstances, but I left it blank for the reasons that I'm not sure if that would be a legitimate thing to add, at the time I applied I was a little more confident about my shots there than I am now, & its quite a hassle to get a letters from my doctors...)
SAT taken 3 times:
2 years ago 680 math 680 verbal
8 months ago 700 math 700 verbal
2 months ago 760 math 700 verbal
SAT II scores pending, but Im confident I'll come out fine
ECs pretty much nonexistant until this year
most difficult course schedule possible throughout entirety of high school (currently in calculus III, ap physics C, ect)
2 extremely glowing letters of reccommendation

Any chances?

I would also like to ask about McMaster, I cant find a single thing on it here & I am curious as to whether or not I should apply.

Thanks in advance (I know everyone is asking the same thing).

Your SAT scores are quite good, but your GPA is very low for McGill's standards. did any of your letters of rec make mention of your depression? you really should have listed that in the "extenuating circumstances" section on the app, but anyway, due to your test scores and hard class schedule, I'd still say you have a chance.

Can you (anyone) reccommend some other universities in Quebec & Ontario that would be worth looking into, with the credentials I have? I already mentioned that all I've seen about McMaster suggests that it's excellent, but I haven't found enough info to really feel confident about it. I was interested in UoT at one point in time & then I heard a lot of negative things about it (not academically; a lot of people just aren't happy there). I assume that the people on the McGill section will have a much better idea than most others

also, does McGill require you to send AP exam scores?

by the way the D was because of problems with the teacher... should my friend send in a letter from a guidance counselor explaining it? what should be done about it?

harpgirl & ian: Thanks, I'll give concordia a look, dont know any french other than how to say "I am a pineapple", which Im sure is enough to get by on (if I were accepted to a montreal university I would be sure to take a summer class on it to get at least a little background)
nsdlevin: Sorry to cut you off, that was pretty rude of me

I NEED ADVICE!!!
What are chances for an American at McGill????

Here are my stats:

SAT: 760 verbal, 750 math = 1510 combined
SAT II: 730 chem, 720 math IIC, 710 writing
AP Chem - 5, AP English Lang - 5, AP Calculus BC - 3/4, AP World History - 4
I'm taking hardest possible course combination possible (and did the same my junior year)

I did 1 year of research in a University of Central Florida BIOMED lab.
Participated in the 2004 TETSUJIN competition (takes place at Robonexus, L.A.) We basically built a suit to make a guy super strong, and we were the only high school kids there. We got 4th place out of 6 teams in the nation. (won 1500 bucks)
I am Secretary of NHS, Interact, and Science Olympiad
Did weightlifting and tennis last year and this year.

I AM ALSO A CANADIAN CITIZEN! BORN IN MONTREAL, QUEBEC. And I know French...enough to get by. What am I looking at? Rejection? Deferral? Acceptance? Also, when should I apply? like now?

1560 combined (800M/710V, 750M/760V)
800 Math IIC, 780 Writing, 780 Bio, 780 Chem
AP: 5 in Bio, Chem, US Hist, Calc BC, Comp Sci
Most rigorous coursework possible, one of the best public high schools in MA
4.17 W GPA (12%-ish I think)

Living in the US.

Could I bank on McGill as a safety, or is there some doubt?

One more question to throw in, a big one: Would it be worth my time to cancel this application & resubmit w/ extenuating circumstances? This is probably my top school choice @ the moment, so it would be worth paying the application fee again if I can raise my chances.
