Definitely seconded. (I’m watching The Abyss right now; I’ll type a longer response later)

Mesquite, I am not at all familiar with engineering internships, but is there any possibility for one that happens to be located in another country (UAE, Germany, Saudi Arabia, somewhere where there a lot of engineering firms)? I know that IHP counts study in Canada (where I would really like to intern) towards the requirement and you could make a case that Puerto Rico or a US Possession is study abroad.

Rereading your and Kansasdem’s posts, I guess I am not fully aware of how engineering and pre-med allow courses taken at non-US institutions to transfer into the curriculum and/or professional school requirements. I’m also in the boat of needing to take multiple classes that count towards my major(s) while studying abroad, but am seriously considering just enrolling in a foreign university as a visiting student, taking courses that are guaranteed to transfer to my major and having UA reimburse me. The textbook we used in IHP really pushed integration into the local cultures and highly recommended study abroads where one is basically a university student who just happens to be from the US. If you’ve ever seen the movie L’auberge espagnole (the Spanish Apartment), it’d be a less dramatic version of that.

I know that the domestic student exchange program that UA participates in includes institutions Canada and Puerto Rico and I’d assume that other schools have procedures in place to accept a visiting US student for a semester or two.

I called this past week and was told new scholie info would not be posted until August 1.
I was told there could be changes for students who are going to be seniors in high school in the 2010-2011 school year and the information currently posted may change.

Auburn has already posted their changes (presidential is 2/3 tution for oos…no longer full) and UA-Huntsville no longer has all of their information posted.

I am not sure what the situation is. Any clarifiaction from UA would be great.

Who told you that?

On UA’s website it says that the scholarship info is for the 2010-11 school year.

[Out-of-State Scholarships - Undergraduate Scholarships - The University of Alabama](http://scholarships.ua.edu/types/out_of_state.html)

If a scholarship is undergoing some kind of change, then it wouldn’t be posted as it is now.

National Hispanic has been removed for a few months now because it is under review.

I was told that was for students who will be freshman in the 2010-2011 school year not hs seniors in 2010-2011. The criteria for student applying this fall is not yet finalized according to what I was told by UA

I’m interested to see if and how UA will change its merit scholarships, especially since so many students started considering and ended up attending UA because of them.

Should the terms of a scholarship change later on, those who already have the scholarship are grandfathered into the original terms of their scholarship. For example, my scholarship permits me to take 17 credits per semester without an extra fee while newer scholarships only allow a student to take 16. In the rare event that the terms of a scholarship changed during an application season, you would have a case that you should be awarded whichever scholarship is better. Since UA has not yet removed the current scholarships from its website, I’d assume that you would be eligible for them. FWIW, officially I have the “Presidential Scholarship 2009,” while this year’s incoming students have the 2010 versions of the scholarships and you would have the 2011 version which is listed as a 2010-2011 scholarship just like you are in your hs’s class of 2011 graduating in the 2010-2011 school year. If you graduated at the end of the 1st semester, you’d be the class of 2010 Fall, but that is still in the 2010-2011 school year.

Just like when you call a 1-800 number for something, the person answering the phone/e-mail may be incorrect. I’d suggest printing off or saving a copy of the current scholarships with a datestamp on it.

Wow, it would be extremely disappointing if they changed the scholarships this late in the game – they should take care of that before any applications are submitted. The “guaranteed” full ride was of course a huge draw to UA for me, and I’ll be pretty upset if after already sending in my app and all other required materials, I find out that I’ll no longer be eligible for that.

I clearly remember when DS was applying last fall asking and being told that the terms of the Presidential as well as the Engineering scholarships as posted were subject to change and would be finalized by (guess the approximate date) Sept 15 or something like that. Could probably search my posts on here to verify the actual date from last year. The person was very clear about this, as was our regional rep. Will look for that post.

Found my post from from June 2009
"Talked to UA admissions via email today. The new scholarship requirements have not been decided and will be available in August. If the GPA minimum is raised that could affect things quite a bit. "

Guess I was asking about the qualifying numbers, not the amounts but I assume since one could change so could the other.

I would send an email to Carolyn Rogers (the director of scholarships) to get the final word.

I would ask specifically about the Presidential, UA Scholar, etc, for OOS students. I wouldn’t just ask generally about scholarships, because the National Hispanic is being reviewed.

carolyn.rogers@ua.edu
Carolyn Rogers 205-348-6756

I had emailed my regional recruiter after I saw the questions concerning the possible changes to the Presidential scholarship. This is what my recruiter responded with - 'The scholarship levels posted online are set for 2011. Any changes from this point would affect the graduation classes after 2011. The scholarship web site, [Undergraduate Scholarships - The University of Alabama](http://www.scholarships.ua.edu), has the most current and accurate scholarship information. To my knowledge there have been no changes to the presidential scholarship awards or academic requirements. '

Before I got that response, I also emailed Carolyn Rogers. I will update when I get a response back from her.

I sent Carolyn Rogers an email stating that my D had just applied for admission for the 2011 fall session and had qualified for the Presidential Scholarship and that I heard that the requirements may change. Here is her response: ‘The requirements will not change in that she would still be eligible for the Presidential and to apply for consideration for additional scholarship funds as a University Fellow and Academic Elite candidate with her current scores.’

Her response did not say whether or not the scholarship benefits would change so I responded back to her attempting to verify that it would still cover four years of OOS tuition. Her response was - 'The Presidential covers OOS tuition for four years (8 terms) of study. If tuition increases, the amount of the scholarship will increase to meet the tuition costs. The one thing it does not cover is fees. '

Hope this helps!

Thanks so much for letting us know! I’m definitely breathing a sigh of relief over here. :)

Same here!

That is good news!! With Auburn’s changes to their presidential scholarship we may end up a house divided.

It makes sense that the Presidential and the rest of the “university scholarships” won’t change because in the past, when Bama was going to change a scholarship, they would pull it off the website while it’s under review.

Right now, the NH scholarship is gone because it’s under review. I don’t know if it will be coming back or not. The feeling I get is that Bama has funding for about 10-12 of those scholarships to be awarded each year (so about 40-50 active at any one time), but this last year there were about 22 students that qualified. It’s a very expensive scholarship (about $110k each), and it might be hard to justify having 100 or so active at any one time while other students who have higher stats are only getting free tuition.

If it comes back, I wonder if it will have a higher ACT/SAT req’t…such as an ACT 33/34 or equivalent SAT.

That’s just my take…not from the university.

Automatic scholarships are becoming a rare breed…I just heard that they actually used to be the norm.

I decided to see what Carolyn Rogers had to say about the other OOS scholarships. I emailed her and she said that they haven’t finalized them, but didn’t foresee them changing the qualifications. I’ll do what ShamrockDad did and see if the amounts will change…

She said that they are looking at it. So they may or may not change the amounts. Interesting…

Which other scholarships did you ask about? When I did email Carolyn I did give her my D stats concerning the Presidential.

I asked about all the other OOS scholarships esp. the UA Scholar one.
