FYI -- Conditions of UA Presidential Scholarship

She emailed me back say that “The amount of the awarded funds will be the main factor in changes”

Perhaps the Presidential will stay the same and UA Scholar will be 1/2 tuition or a fixed amount?

Either way, I will probably sweat until I get official notification that the Presidential is four years OOS tuition!

Yeah…the lady said that they’ll be posting the scholarships next week, so we don’t have to wait very long. Hopefully they won’t change anything, or even better, raise the amounts! (I wouldn’t count on it, considering the economy, but I’d be very happy if they did)

Will keep my fingers crossed!

Looks like nothing changed for the Presidential!

nothing changed…at all

haha maybe our emails made them feel sympathetic :)…naturally, since there were some money concerns, we should apply early so the money doesn’t run out before we apply

fyi i think there are a few more questions in the FAQ [FAQ - Undergraduate Scholarships - The University of Alabama](Undergraduate Scholarships Frequently Asked Questions – Afford)

For those wondering what the maximum number of credits per semester covered under the Presidential scholarship, I emailed Carolyn Rogers to clarify. Here are my emails and her replies:

My son is a NMF and has been awarded UA’s generous package. Sometime last month, I inquired about the maximum number of credits that were included under the Presidential Scholarship. At that time, you mentioned that this policy was under review and suggested that I check back with you. I was wondering whether UA has decided to keep the 16 credits as the maximum for the Presidential or expand it to 17 credits. My son’s current Fall schedule puts him at 16 credits but the 1 credit from Alabama Action in early Aug. will put him over that, to 17 credits. We will therefore need to pay OOS tuition for 1 credit, if 16 credits are covered under his scholarship.

Carolyn Rogers: The additional hour will be covered if charged as tuition to his student account. Tuition charges above 16 will be covered based on the number of additional hours the student is taking.

Would you please clarify the second sentence for me “…based on the number of additional hours the student is taking.” How many credits are these additional hours? Is there a limit beyond the 16 credits where the tution will still be covered under the Presidential or is the 1-credit Alabama Action the only exception to this policy? This will help us in planning for future semesters.

Carolyn Rogers:
A students tuition will be covered up to 20 hours per term (and reviewed if they attempt 21 or more hours). The only restriction is the eight semesters of undergraduate study. If a student completes an undergraduate degree in 6 semesters, the remaining two semesters could not be used for graduate studies, but would be forfeited.

I appreciate the explanation, Mrs. Rogers. This certainly confirms our belief in Alabama’s generosity!

hmm … this is interesting.

wonder if they apply the same standards to the UA scholar scholarship?

re - finishing in 6 semesters … just don’t FINISH any degree in 6 and take graduate courses! problem solved!

So, I’m trying to understand this:
…if I’m a NMF and awarded 4 years of OOS tuition
…and will have enough transferable credits to enter as a junior
…and those credits all apply directly to my intended major’s core curriculum or general
education requirements
…and if I am interested in the 5-year University Scholars Program (Aerospace Engineering
students can complete requirements for both a BS and an MS in 5 years because it
allows dual (undergraduate and graduate) credits
…and if I am able to actually complete the program in 4 years, (here’s the question) will I have to pay OOS tuition for that 4th year??

PNW, students in the University Scholars programs are exempt from the rule that scholarships do not cover graduate courses as long as they have not yet completed all the requirements for a bachelor’s degree. However, a 5th year at UA would not be covered since a scholarship is only good for 8 semesters. If you can complete a BS and MS at UA in 4 years, you’ll be fine. As an interesting fact, you would get your master’s degree before your bachelor’s because of the order in which degrees are presented at the graduation ceremony.

I’m really surprised and excited that the tuition scholarships now cover 20 credits per term. This rule change means that eligible students can take an extra class (or even an overload) and still have tuition covered.

seatide, do you think the change will apply to ua scholars, as well? the 16 credit limit is, well, limiting! haha!

: )

^ ya esp for engineering majors, who have huge course loads usually

I e-mailed Ms. Rogers to confirm that this rule change also applies to current students and if UA scholars will receive a discount on the fees for taking additional credits and will post again after she responds.

Thanks, SEA_Tide…
That is great information and even greater news!

will be interested in the response.

: )

oh lol i sent the same email…now what? haha :D

She said that a UA Scholar can take 12 hours and up to 20 hours per term and the scholarship will cover 2/3 of tuition expenses.

WOW!
Sophocles - you are the best - this is huge news… - so the 16 credit limit now extends to 20/semester. Would we have not known this had you not emailed? This will really make scheduling around the new Engr. core much easier! Thank you for all the legwork. (make sure you save those emails  )

^^^Being the obsessive-compulsive that I am, I followed up with Carolyn Rogers, posing the following:

"Dear Ms. Rogers,
I read today on an Internet forum that UA has altered the restriction on the number of credits covered by the Presidential Scholarship, raising the limit from 16 to 20 per semester, for a maximum of eight semesters.

Two questions: 1) Is this information correct? 2) If a student is double majoring and completes the requirements for Major #1 in semester 7 and is on schedule to complete the requirements for Major #2 in semester 8, will the Presidential Scholarship still apply?"

Her response: “The information is correct. As long as your son is taking undergraduate courses, and has not received a diploma, then he will be able to complete his double major in the 8 terms.”

Just when you think UA can’t get any better, it does.

Roll Tide!
