FYI for new students/parents

Just wanted to let everyone know about freestuff.umd.edu

It's a school-wide calendar of free events - just click on the month you're interested in (under events) and scroll through to see wide range of things available - May, of course, is going to not be as exciting since finals start soon, but browse other months. Some of the events include lectures, study session/help, concerts, cultural activities, day trips, community service opportunities, big campus events (career fair, Maryland Day for example), etc. They update it all the time so try to get in the habit of looking at least once a month to see what's going on. Warning: in the beginning of August it will look like nothing is going on in September, but as soon as school starts up the calendar will start to fill up.

Some schools/departments (i.e.:Clark, Smith) also host their own calendar of events specific to them so check those every so often also. For example, here's the one for engineering http://www.eng.umd.edu/html/events/ - that's how you can find out about the engineering picnic (in the fall and a must attend!) and other unique programs to your major that wouldn't necessarily be added to the general calendar. To find different department calendars, try to Google (the name of the school) calender of events...

They should tell about you this at orientation but there are so many other bigger things that you are paying attention to, you will likely not notice/remember, so that's why I wanted to post this ...

Good source Mary.
