I’m looking for some perspective on how important the Subject Tests are when applying to GA Tech.
D is a rising Sr. In-state. High achieving private school. 1500 SAT (750/750). Mostly all A’s (out of 36 classes in her 6 years of high school, has 32 As and 4 Bs). Good ECs. Leader on Robotics Team.
Interested in Scheller School of Business.
Her weak spot is the Subject Tests. Didn’t do so well in past on Physics, Math I or Chemistry. Not even a close call about whether to use them not when she applies.
Got results today for Bio, Math II and Lit. Math II not good. The others are decent - 720 Bio (80th percentile) and 730 Literature (84th percentile).
So we have 2 scores that maybe we might use in an application.
My question is…for Tech, would those two results help or hurt her if she submitted them. Is that better or worse than not submitting any Subject Test scores at all??
Any and all input welcome. Thanks everyone.
GaTech parent.
I think the biology and literature SAT subject exams are good scores and since she wants to major in business,
it seems it would be helpful to submit those and not worry about her math subject score. She has a good SAT score. She may want to check what math is required for her major at Tech. She needs to take math class in her senior year. Its best not to take AP Stats alone, but take a precalculus or calculus course to get into Tech. If she can fit AP Stats and a calculus or precalculus class, that would be best. Focus hard on math, to get into Tech. Also the preparation will either give her the grounding she needs or it could sink her in freshman year, look at math requirements for a business degree, and prepare, prepare, prepare! Review math in the summer too, a little bit but don’t burn out.
I hope you get some other opinions about wisdom of submitting the subject exam scores for a business major.
Thanks for your input!!! We appreciate it.
Yes, she will be taking AP Calc AB in her senior year. From what we have gathered, at least out of her high school, virtually everyone who has gotten in to Tech has had AP Calc AB at a minimum.
Of the B’s she’s gotten in high school, 3 of the 4 are math related. Luckily, they were FR and Soph year. Honors Pre Calc Jr year are an A both semesters, so despite low Subject Test score in Math, her class grade is somewhat solid and is backed up by the 750 on the Math portion of her SAT.
I’m hopeful that with all that, it sort of offsets the lack of submitting a Math SAT Subject test score.
Subject tests are not required by Ga Tech.
Georgia Tech gives COLLEGE CREDITS for some chemistry, English and history SAT subject exam scores!
So it may pay off to take some SAT subject exam tests. Also getting good scores on Subject tests, may
be a check box for admission, in a positive way, even though they are not required by GaTech.
See college credits you can earn at GaTech by taking SAT SUBJECT exams:

For OOS GaTech applicants, I would suggest taking and submitting subject exams as a differentiator.
MIT requires subject tests and lots of GaTech applicants apply to MIT, so most of them have the subject
exams scores and submit them. Its a catch 22, I believe to say “they are not required” when the very top OOS
applicants take them anyway.
Georgia students, it may not matter, I don’t know, but how does one differentiate yourself, if not a perfect SAT subject exam score? Its one way. All optional tests are differentiators, from the all A applicants that apply to GaTech.
Think about differentiating yourself to get in today.
