I am in a bit of a deilmma right now... I can either apply early to many schools, or I can wait.

I have everything done but my essays. I did one essay, but it is bad. However, I am a terrible writer so I dont know how much better it can get...

I would need to write a second essay because villanova requires two.

I have a 94.9 GPA and 1260/1600 or 1890/2400 SATs as of now (Will be getting october scores tomorrow) and a 700 in Math2 SATIIs and a 570 in US History...

I have very good extra curriculars.

My school choices are...

Villanova
Binghamton
Boston College
Lehigh University
Colgate University
University of Maryland, College Park
Bentley College
Boston University
Babson College
Providence College
University of Scranton (safety)
Fordham University

Should I wait till regular decision and work on my essays? OR send them out now?

Can changes be made to my essay/application in the case that I am rejected from certain schools?

Also, if you wouldnt mind reading or helping me out with my essay, please PM me.

Keep in mind that with schools that have Early Decision, it is binding and you can only apply to one school ED. I know for sure at least Colgate is ED only. So you can't really just "apply early to many schools," you can apply early to one school, then if you get deferred/rejected, turn in more polished essays at your regular decision schools. But don't apply ED just to increase your chances - apply ED if you've found your dream school and it's definitely your first choice.

Alternatively, you could apply to any schools on that list that are Early Action, which is non-binding. However, I don't think you can send a better version of your essays if you're deferred to regular admissions, though I'm not 100% sure about that.

You can send in regular applications as early as you want, but if your essays aren't great, wait and work on them/get help. If you're applying to Colgate, you have another essay to write (they have a Colgate-specific supplement to the common application), but it's not your typical college essay so it's not as painful.

I would suggest talking to your college/guidance counselor about your essays - those really are incredibly important - and figuring out which schools have ED and which have EA. While it's nice to just get it all over with, taking a bit more time and effort may have a huge impact.

No, I wouldn't be applying early to all of them... I know the difference between EA and ED... And my guidance counselor is anything but helpful.

Today, my friend who already submit everything wanted to schedule a meeting with her to talk about more possible colleges he should apply to. When he tried to get an appointment she said "I have 65 other students and I can't give you all the attention!" and then he said "can I just ask you one question?" and then she said "RESEARCH IT!"

So basically, I'm afraid to go to her for help, which is very sad.

Anyway, I don't know what to do because there are many smart kids at my school with whom I will be competing for acceptance at many of the same colleges with.

I sorry, I'm a little unclear what your question is. Do you want to apply regular decision, but don't know if you should send in your applications now or later? Would you be applying EA/ED to any of them? If your essays aren't strong, why would you apply RD early and give up the chance to improve them?

Lydia, I have about 3 more days to apply early ACTION to many schools I'm interested in, but my essays are not very strong. Should I send in the applications now and go for early action with weaker essays or apply regular decision with stronger essays?

Do you really azsummer? That's not what everyone else I asked thought...

Also, I got my October SAT Scores this morning and now have a 620 in CR, 680 in Math and 630 in Writing... 1300/1600 (Very happy!) and 1930/2400 (Meh..).

Thanks for the explanation; I interpreted your original post as stating that you were planning to apply early to your whole list. Though ED/EA stats usually show that ED/EA applicants have an advantage over RD applicants, that's skewed a lot by recruited athletes. Any advantage from applying early is probably less than the advantage of having stronger essays, and if you apply early and are deferred, I don't think you can change your essay for the RD round at all. If you apply EA to some places and they reject you, you would have 2-4 weeks to change your essay for your RD applications to other schools, if that's enough time for you (it wouldn't be for me!).

It also depends on the school. I don't know much about Scranton, but if you know you'll easily get in and they have EA, it can be nice to have at least one answer back!
