Hi
I am a Washington resident who is interested in attending the University of Colorado at Boulder. I was wondering if anyone knew someone who had hained residency i na nother state to save money on tuition. As my grandparents are paying for college, the bursar's office said I could technically beconsidered independent and gain residency after one year. They parents would have to stop listing me as a dependant, and I would technically be emancipated. Does anyone know anything about this process or know someone who is doing the same thing?
Any advice would help.

The most common standard for state residency is living one year in the state while not pursuing any educational activities.

I live in Colorado and attend UCCS -- and I can tell you a little practical knowledge about gaining residency.

First -- you have to be an independent. That is a whole other problem -- and pretty difficult to overcome.

For the residency -- you have to show that you have lived in the state of colorado for 12 months or more with plans to make colorado your permanent residence. They will ask for proof if you did not graduate from a colorado high school. They will want: driver's license, voter registration, lease, utility bills, colorado income tax forms, proof of colorado employment. You will have to show all of these for the 12 month period prior to attending school.

this is very difficult to do -- you don't do this just to get the tuition break. And I am not kidding, they will ask for all of this -- including copies of utility bills in your name for the prior 12 month period.
