Pat Sajak announced he will be retiring soon after 40ish years with Wheel of Fortune.
We have seen a lot of game shows in our life! Some have stood the test of time like Wheel (gotta be close to 50 years??!) others have been short lived.
Which game show current or in the past would have a knack for and love a shot at being a contestant on? Or to host???
I always LOVED Let’s Make A Deal. I don’t know if there is a newer version of this show but I loved it growing up. Monty Hall could be a little frenetic but I think I liked the fast pace and well, not a lot of skill, just luck to win! I always loved when he did the little side thing of “who has this item in their purse - first one wins a prize!!” - and you’d see all the women frantically looking through their purse.
I believe I read yesterday that Wheel debuted in 1975 with Chuck Woolery as its host, which would make the show 48 yrs old—so @abasket , almost 50 yrs old was spot on!
I loved “The Price is Right” when I was growing up. Every time my mom dragged my sister and me out to go shopping, we would guess prices and pretend we were on the show.
Now I love “Jeopardy.” My husband says I should audition, but no way! The categories about bands and modern culture would stymie me.
I would be a contestant on Wheel of Fortune in a heartbeat! Even better, H & I would crush it on couples week. I love Jeopardy, but I’m only as good as the category - and there’s a lot of stuff I don’t know. Wouldn’t want to embarrass myself.
I could never host a show. That is a whole lot harder than it looks!
Anyone remember a show from a LONG time ago…it was something where you got a shopping cart and could have anything you put in it within a short period of time. That’s the one I want to be on…except it’s long gone!
I loved that. In fact many moons we did something similar at a non-profit I was working for as a fundraiser. A local small grocery store allowed the ticket “winner” to shop for a certain amount of time and the store covered the cost of the cart contents. We made $ off the tickets sold for the opportunity to win!
I was on Wheel in 1996, won enough $ to buy a car (I chose a Toyota Camry, which I lovingly named The Wheel-Mobile) - Pat was a sweetheart. His cohost, well, let’s just say I hope she was having a bad day, because she wasn’t very gracious. My mic fritzed out mid-first round and so we had to stop to rewire me. Cohost literally stomped off stage and blurted, “don’t call me until you’re sure!” meanwhile Pat came over and chatted with us all about life and the weather (meaning just idle chit chat). I enjoyed the process, love the game…
I’d love to host Millionaire (I love trivia), and overall I think I enjoy gameshows where there’s some knowledge or skill to them. If The Amazing Race counts as a gameshow, THAT’S the game I want to host and be on!
Thanks for sharing, that’s cool! I like hearing that Pat is as nice as he seems. I can’t believe he’s 76!! Reminds me of my dad in that respect.
We tape Jeopardy and I always add the last few minutes of Wheel to see the final spin. My mom watched Wheel faithfully. Even after she’d started declining, she was really good at guessing the puzzles.
There was a revival during the pandemic. It was fun to watch because everyone was spaced a safe distance from each other and the camera crew (when they showed them) had masks on. It kind of date stamps the filming.
I watched the Bozo Show on WGN, and always wanted to play the grand prize game where the contestant tosses a ping pong ball into a series of 6 buckets spaced from short to long. Miss a bucket, and you’re out.
As an adult? Maybe Press Your Luck. High energy, fun, not too much thought involved.
Hosting? LOL I’ve got the charm, but no charisma.
Was this in the era where you had to “buy” stuff on the show with your winnings? Or did you get cash and buy a car later?
Omg this Bozo on WGN was my children’s childhood. I believe we watched it every Sunday morning. We set up COUNTLESS bucket/ball game imitations at home! Bozo is kind of creepy but that show they loved! Honestly they hated clowns otherwise!
I once won a supermarket sweep … I had a given amount of time to fill a basket for free. I was only 23, so I wasn’t very good at it. And it’s actually much harder than you would think!
