Game Systems

Mainly targeted towards the Cate students and parents, as a hardcore gamer, are students allowed to bring a gaming console like Thacher? If anyone else has experience with this feel free to answer.

I’m not a Cate student but what do you mean a gaming console? Like an XBox, PS4 etc. to hook up to the tv or something small like the Nintendo Switch?

Something to hook up to a TV

Have you checked the student handbook? I know some schools specifically address it in the handbook.

Great idea, didnt even think of that, thank you @vwlizard

This advice has been posted before, but I think it’s sound, so I will repeat. Even if a gaming system is allowed, you may want to leave it home until Parents Weekend (or later) and then have your parents bring it or ship it if you actually find you have any real time to play with it. The problem is that some kids THINK they have time to play with it and then discover when grades/term reports come out that they really should have been using that time more wisely. Don’t underestimate the level of work/engagement at BS, and don’t tempt yourself unnecessarily.

And – don’t tempt the dorm parents! I had confiscated a whole closetful of game systems from my freshmen in the boys’ dorm by the time Parents Weekend rolled around.

From what I’ve heard, sometimes dorms will have gaming systems in their common rooms brought by Juniors or seniors.

Just the opinion of one parent (of non-gamer girls), but there is no way I would let a kid bring a gaming system to BS their first year. No way.

I’ve seen how the sons of my friends can be with gaming and I think the potential for time-wasting is very high…and at a time when the kids are most likely going to need every free moment to keep up with work, etc.

Many schools also turn off the internet by a certain time so you might not even be able to play after all your work and activities.

Most schools have security softwares such as “Lightspeed” that both monitor your online activity and block certain websites. You most likely won’t be able to play online. But like I said, seniors sometimes bring gaming consoles ad place them in the common room (with the dorm head’s permission).

And many do not. How/if/what a school blocks access will vary from school to school.

You probably can bring your system to hook up to a tv in the common room of the freshmen boys’ dorm, but one may already be there and it may depend on the dorm faculty. When my son was at Cate, most of the gaming was on computers - playing League, Battlefield, PubG, etc, but sometimes there would be a game going on a playstation in the common room. You cannot play during the school day or during study hours, during sports, etc. and the internet goes down at night, so it’s a small window to play games. Somehow my son always found time!
