I was accepted to LSA for fall 2015, but I’m considering a gap year. Financial aid is very important to my family, and I’m hoping for merit scholarships (but don’t expect them!). If you defer enrollment for a year, does Michigan allow you to defer merit scholarships, or do you have to enroll immediately?
Thanks!
After a long agony, my S decided not to do a gap year, because he would lose his large sum of freshman scholarship as UM didn’t allow him to defer the scholarship. However, he could still be eligible for other smaller scholarships (just had to reapply for them) as long as he’s still qualified when he re-enrolls after gap year. But definitely not the large one (or so said the FA office.)
In any case, you’ll have until August 1st (~a month before school starts) to decide whether or not to take a gap year.
