Gap year? Deferring your enrollment?

Lately, I have been doing a lot of research and discussing with my parents about what would be the next best step for me to take once I graduate from High school. If someone had suggested a year ago that I should take a “gap year” I would have probably told them they are crazy. I am a very goal-oriented person and I have had my whole life planned out since I was probably 12 years old. Unfortunately, sometimes plans dont go as smoothly as you would like them to. I have officially decided that UVA is the school I want to attend to, however, there is one slight little problem… finances. Right now my parents arent in a position to pay for the hefty price of UVA, and frankly I dont want them to have to take out huge amount of loans from the bank just so that I can attend my dream school (afterall, I have two other brothers to think of). There are private organizations in my country that give full/partial scholarships to students who want to study abroad, however, the application processes wont start until probably late May or August. My grandparents have also offered to help me out with a decent amount of the expenses, however, I would rather wait and see if I can get a scholarship through a private organization in my country or save up some money of my own by working for a year. Ultimately, my question is, can I defer my enrollment to UVA? If yes, how do I appeal to the admissions committee? Will I have to file a new application altogether next year?

Any advice/responses will be greatly appreciated! Thank you all in advance!
