Hi, I was accepted EA to UVA (go hoos!!!) However, I am considering taking a gap year. My plan would be to attend an intensive Italian language school in Rome for one year. The main focus of my gap year would be to gain fluency in Italian. I looked up UVA’s requirements for a gap year, and it says that “Students deferring their enrollment may NOT be enrolled at another institution during their gap year.” Am I correct in that I could still take a gap year to study Italian at that intensive language school, since I will not be earning a degree? (hopefully I will be earning an official language certificate though, I want to get to at least a C1 level)
I think that you need to ask UVA.
I think that sounds like an amazing opportunity if UVA allows it. I would certainly recommend following through if UVA gets back to you and lets you do this. Although I’m not a huge proponent in gap years, I think this would be a great use of time and a great experience.
Definitely a question for admissions. My guess is that if the classes don’t go toward a degree then it would be acceptable, but I don’t know. Have you looked into UVA study abroad programs?
@Collegehelp4us Yes, I have looked at the study abroad programs UVA offers! I will definitely be studying abroad at some point during undergrad. The main reason I am considering a gap year is to step back and give myself time to grow as a person outside of high school-- and to achieve something that I’ve always wanted to do, fluency in another language! I’m pretty well traveled in Europe already, so I’ll just be staying in Italy and interacting with the local culture as much as possible
