Is there some sort of provision in the common app for people who have taken gap years to write an essay about their gap year or provide an explanation?

There is a small text box for describing that, but it’s not long enough for an essay or anything like that.
You can put something in Additional Information (just bullets on what you did). If you want to write an essay, use something from it for your common app essay.
