Has anyone received notice of invitation for either of these? Garrett is for guys and Sherwood is for girls.

My son was invited last year. Initially he was awarded a $12,000 per year merit scholarship with the possibility of receiving the Garrett for substantially more. He was flown to Whitman for an interview and participated in the admitted students weekend that was going on at the same time. Ultimately he did not receive the Garrett, but was awarded an extra $2,500 per year for going to campus to interview. That trip made a huge impression on him, he decided that Whitman was the place.

During Family Weekend I saw a young woman my son had met on that trip, who had been interviewing for the Sherwood scholarship. She also was not the chosen recipient, but decided on Whitman anyway. She said that all but about 4 of the finalists for the Sherwood and Garrett scholarships had decided to attend Whitman. It must have been a pretty great weekend. The fact that they picked up the bill impressed me a lot.

BTW, my son loves it there.

My son got notified yesterday that he is a finalist… VERY excited!

How are notifications sent? Mail, email, phone call, etc?

FedEx - his acceptance and Garrett info…

Best of luck to your son, andioleary, and to all the other Garrett and Sherwood finalists.

I was selected as a finalist for the Sherwood Scholarship. Does anyone know how many people actually receive it (and become Sherwood/Garrett Scholars)?

I just heard back from California’s fabulous associate director of admissions for Whitman, PJ Petrone. He says: “We have invited ~15 students for the Garrett scholarship weekend. We’ll award a scholarship to ~3-5 of them. The same is true for the Sherwood for women.”

Good luck everybody!
