NYSP2010: It was on this thread. and I did hound them todaybut it’s taking too long. Im going crazy right now.

SleepyV: adding to what NYSP2010 told you, think about your situation. You actually have something that stands out. Your GPA is great and you have a job;yet unlike most of teenagers, you dedicate your money to help your family. Your contribution actually helps support your family. This is an amazing thing to write about. As far as service goes, this is a noble thing to give your time for.

dqn217: I don’t know exactly how much. I attended a conference held by a local scholarship organization saying that GMS expected approximately over 11,000 aplicants. Awards given to 1000. so… based on this, I would say 9% of us(the 1,000) are going to win this… pretty intense

LCB334: If that is what you do, then it’s fine.

JSea11: You list all that as activities

aziangirl: Where are you planning on going?

Thanks a lot NYSP2010 and LocoArts. I feel a bit more confident. ^^

Just following up on my clubs. Where is the “activities” tab?
Under the accomplishment tab there are the “Honors and Awards”, “Unpaid Volunteer Work” and “Paid Employment” tabs. Under Leadership I do not see an activities tab either. T_T

That was my question. I didn’t know where to list my activities that were neither community service activities or activities I held a position in. I guess we can discuss them in our essays.

@LocoArts: I plan on going to wichita state university for pre-pharmacy and then to Kansas University for pharmacy
idk if wat im thinking is true or not but since the tuition for any colleges in kansas are not that expensive compare to cali or some other states. do u think that it would lessen my chances of winning this scholarship? I have seen the lists of the gates scholars last year and most of them live in the kind of “wealthy” states. u know wat i mean? so im also kind of worry about that…

I wonder who reads our essays? Does anyone know?

I’m pretty sure the numbers will be much higher. Three years ago the number was 13,000, and I think I read the numbers last year were at 17,000. Maybe NYSP2010 could verify this?

aziangirl: Thats pretty cool. And don’t worry about it lessening your chances. If it is what you want to do, go for it. It actually does seem like everyone who applied is going for top schools. Last year(as I read in forums) everybody except one person had applied to Ivy League schools or close to Ivys. But it will not lessen your chances at all, one of the first people to announce a scholarship win in 2008 actually applied to a small local college(in a very unrecognized state). Basically, as long as the need is there and you show credentials to be a Gates scholar, you got the money. you seem like a determined person…I think you will do great…

JSea11:They have a selected panel. Kinda like the ACT: a team of Psychologists make the test and special teachers are hired to grade it. My guess is that they would hire teachers also. If not, my only other guess would be the Gates Foundation commitee itself(but i highly doubt this…extremely doubt this)

GA2012MOM: If it continues to increase accordingly, i would estimate close to 21,000 (seeing that your numbers increase by 2,000) this year. This said… theres a 4% chance of getting it. This sucks.

I also read on a threadfor 2009-2010 that the applicant number was 21,500–I can’t assure the validity of this but if it is true(but it would be cool since it’s close to the estimate I just graphed out, although a year off), this means this year will increase to 27500(given an increase of 6000, since the line grows in multiples of two) so… 3%.

Haha…keeps getting lower.

I also heard that the 1000 applicants are divided by race:

350 Black
350 Hispanic
150 Native, Pacific Islander
150 asian

To everyone: Just a moment ago I was searching for statistics on GMS and ran accross a website that said GMS applications were delayed till January 11. This is NOT true. At all! If you find stuff like this please post it and have somebody call and/or e-mail the GMS program. The GMS main website still says January 10 so dont give yourself that extra day. It was probably someone trying to get an upper hand by knocking competition out.

Deadline is still January 10

@aziangirl do you live in Wichita?

JSea11 and SleepyV: In my case, my activites fit into leadership roles and unpaid service. (this is because my clubs and organizations are mostly designated for service). Everything else falls under leadership role since I have a position of command.

Remember, even if you are the treasurer for the Rice club, that is a leadership role. Leadership doesn’t exactly mean to be in charge.

JSea, all the activities you mentioned the first time you posted this forum qualify as leadership roles.

@dqn217: unfortunately, i do lol
its pretty boring here and most of my classmates want to go out of state for college…but i feel like im not at that stage yet, im not ready to leave my family and paying for my own bills hahaha

thanx locoarts! ur words made me felt a little better! and im sure u’ll do great too, considering ur not a procrastinator like me :)

@aziangirl
Hey I live in Wichita too! And it is very boring!
