I'm wondering how much your family income has to be for this scholarship... I think mine might be too high.. does anyone know the income range for this?

I think it's close to something below $40,000.

help me????
How long do the essays have to be?!?!?i dont think i can write a 1200 words essay coherently...

Your EFC must be below $3850. Now, what income range would produde a $3850 EFC? I don't know. It depends on your individual circumstances. Some of your parents might make $45000 a year, but have 4 kids to raise and mortages to pay, so your EFC might be $2000, while other might have an income of $30,000 but only one child and no rent, and their might EFC might also be $2000. My advice is do the FAFSA as soon as possible. They will tell you your EFC. Good luck everyone.
IF you have anyone question, PM me.

And confucius, the Essays can be as long as you want. Two years ago, I wrote 2 pages essays and 2 paragraphs essays. So it not the length, its the content.

I am applying for the Gates Millenium Scholarship this year. I am in Ohio.

wow 11 thousand last year. that's actually not a lot. I assumed more than 11k people would apply for such a generous scholarhsip.

1/11 is pretty good odds so everyone, apply! and really write about what makes you special.

Yeah 1/11 is not a bad odd, it's like the same odd as getting into Harvard.

yea thas y im applying too >.<
and i was just wondering about the essay thing because they said 7500 letters max. and for the UC essay, u should try to match up with the number they gave..so yea

the online application enforces the word limit, so watch out.

If my mom makes 50K-60K, single parent, and one bro in college, is it worth applying?

bump (x10 chars)

bump this up please, it's important mucho

Is your EFC below $3850? That would qualify you for some major pell grant aid, that is the only indication they use.

I filled out the FAFSA. My brother didn't get the Pell Grant when we did it for him 2 years ago. So if I don't qualify, then it's probably a waste of time to fill out the scholarship, right?

I have a question. teachers cant be your recommender and nominator???

and my school doesnt rank, will that hurt my chances?!?!?!?

to confucius, I would assume you won't be able to do that. but call them to make sure. you don't want to be disqualified after all that effort.

and don't worry about the school ranking.

I have a friend who graded GMS essays with the APIA (Asian Pacific Islander Association) last year. I asked her this:

On the essays, are they looking for proper essays - with intro, body, conclusion - or do they just want me to answer the prompt? Am I allowed to reuse some essays I've sent to colleges, or will colleges see this application?

And she told me this:

Your main goal is to address the prompt no matter how short or long your response may be. As long as you fully answer the question there is no need for the formal intro, body, and conclusion. Thinking back on when I had to answer these endless questions, I kept reminding myself that these readers are going to be looking at so many of these. My best advice for these prompts is to be interesting, yet concise.

As for recycling essays....definitely do it! Colleges will not be reviewing these applications, just readers selected by APIA.

Another tidbit...all readers are Asian and have some sort of leadership role in their own communities! They want to hear/read about anything that has to do with how being Asian and a leader has influenced EVERY area of your life. They eat this stuff up....along with community service.

Hope this helps you guys; I'm not done with mine yet!

so each of the essays on the GMSP application can be up to 7800 characters long or total the essays must add up to 7800

I couldn't agree with Grapes more about what GMS is looking for in term of essays.

And Cindyay, each essay can be up to 7800 characters long.
