**GATES MILLENNIUM 2016****

This is the last year they are naming new Gates Millennium Scholars. Existing scholars will be funded through 2026.

Then we should be the best year. ;

Unfortunately, it is as @sadovaya says. The GMS 2016 class will be the last selected incoming group, as the program goal of 20000 students is met.

Has anyone submitted their application?

Starting my essays today. Has anyone already finished and submitted their application?

@louise99 I submitted mine several days ago

I’m submitting mine within a few days. I’m still editing a few of the essays.

Does anyone know how to add the recommenders? Kind of freaking out right now.

Hi there! You, your nominator and recommender must complete all forms online.

Okay so I have 2 recommender forms but no nominator forms…and I assigned 1 as a recommender and the other as a nominator…

Your nominator and recommender both must complete the “Nominator Form” or “Recommender Form” online.

I remember last year there was a link you could send your nominator and recommender in an email via your GMS Application. I suggest you also send them your GMS registration ID, because they’re going to need it later.

They’ll need to register on the GMS website if they haven’t already written a reference for GMS in the past.
Once they do, they’ll need to click on “Reference Landing Page”

“Start new Form”
“Search for a student”
“Enter GMS registration ID and student’s first and last name.”

Once they complete this portion, they’ll then be able to select “recommender form” or “nominator form” where they’ll then be able to fill out the form for you.

@Chopinspiano If they already did this, then your reference likely messed up at the last portion where they clicked the wrong form. I would call and email the GMS office to see if they can delete the accidental recommender form, then allowing your reference to submit the nominator form instead.

is it bad that i found out about this a week ago and have not told my recommender about this yet… i’ve seen in some threads that they have to write five essays???

@chootimes It’s 8 essays but no. I would email them right away specifically a person that has already written you a recommendation.

Correction:
Your complete GMS application consists of 16 essays total (17 if you have graduated from high school or earned your GED more than one year ago).

3 of these essays are from your NOMINATOR:

These include: Academic Performance, Academic Strength, and Nominator's Recommendation.

Your recommender and nominator therefore write 8 essays in total on your behalf, but there is a distinguishing factor between both of them. Your nominator focuses on your academic side and desire to learn, as well as your strength and performance in the learning environment. Your recommender seeks to distinguish you as more than just a student - but a person that serves his/her community, shows a positive impact upon it, and wishes to do more with his/her future to aspire to reach his/her dreams and in turn impact the world he/she lives in.

@chootimes Regarding your situation, it is not too late to tell your recommender about this. I would urge you to notify them immediately in person and via email. The more time they have towards writing your essays, the higher quality they will be and the more it will be able to serve you positively.

Ah thank you! Does my nominator submit my transcript as well?

@chootimes

I do not believe so. You should be the one to submit it.

The only reason my academic nominator asked for my academic transcript was because she really wanted to stuff to help support her in her essays. Through providing your academic transcript - you are also showing your nominator what your academic strength is by the level of difficulty of your classes and what your academic performance in those classes are.

Furthermore, you can also show your growth in the academic environment through your transcript to your nominator. If you have not done so well during the start of your freshman year, your nominator can specify how you are able to adapt and succeed with positive trends in your academics leading up to your senior year.

Likewise, your nominator can also show these positive trends by seeing how you take harder classes as you progress through your high school academic career.

Even if you do not do your best, your academic nominator can also express how you are willing to approach on challenges by taking on more and more rigorous courses, etc.

Hi, I have a problem with my nominators and recommenders. My teacher registered as a recommender but instead I would like for her to nominate me. How can she change her status?

Hey so I might have a problem…how do you know if you’re eligible for Pell Grant?

If you are eligible for free/reduced price lunch, you are likely Pell Grant eligible too. I can’t tell you specific income numbers because it varies based on family size and a host of other factors.
