Gates Millennium Scholarship - 2008-2009

Nope... the only number anyone seems to know is the 1000 that will get the scholarship.

i haven't received anything, either. do you know if they notify you if you will not be a recipient? this would be nice so i don't get my hopes up too high.

I've heard that they will notify everyone regardless of status.

I called the rep. to ask if I need to send in the acceptance letter of the university that I actually attend in fall or can I change the school choice later, and she said that Gates staff just want to verify that we are going to college for sure. Gates Scholars can change their school choice later on.

Proud, do you know what criteria the judges look for in deciding the Gates scholars?

Thanks, memberofthevrwc. Anyone know when to expect to hear from them??

Proud, would you mind telling me your achievements when you were selected to be the Gates Scholar? Did you take a lot of AP classes? Did you have 4.0 and EFC of 0?

Yes Proud, we definitely want to hear your thoughts on what they look for in finalists to select as scholars. You are one of the best resources on this we have on CC.

We should hear about scholar status by April 15. However, from my understanding the earlier you get your papers in the earlier you will hear. I'm not sure about that, but from what I've heard from others that seems to be the case.

Alright, thanks. ^^

man, I forgot what I put down for my Gates application...should have printed them out

Has anyone recieved the actual mail stuff yet? They said they sent mine on march 11th so it takes a few days to get here but i want to be able to meet with my counselor to sign all the paper-work so i can send the stuff in faster. I really really want to know as soon as possible if i get the scholarship. That would save me from a spring break of filling out a bunch of other scholarships, haha when i told my friends this they were like wow, i didn't know you were planning to spend your spring break like that lol.

Destinos,

You really will just have to wait for the papers to show up. I got my paperwork via email so if you want me to fwd it to you PM me.

That is if you're Hispanic. If you aren't there isn't much I can do, because each group gets different papers.

i feel so out of the loop, and i appologize if this has been discussed a billion times already...but what are these papers of which you all speak??

As a finalist, they ask you to fill out some paperwork. You need to submit to them a transcript, your school's profile, and an unweighted cumulative average sheet (all done by the counselor, but the UW average sheet is the form they send to you). They also need a copy of an acceptance letter and a copy of your student aid report. Hope that helps.

Gracias memberofthevrwc, pero yo no soy hispano. Yeah 4 years of spanish and that's all i can really give lol. I guess i can wait for the papers, but it would be nice to have them sooner because I can't predict where my counselor will be in a few days. He might go on vacation. I'm just a little paranoid because i don't exactly have the best luck in the world lol.

I actually got the package in the mail today it contained everything that was in the email plus the GPA form.

Inside the envelope was:

The memorandum that was sent by email.
A GMS Finalist Document Checklist (telling what you needed to submit)
The Unweighted Cumulative GPA form
A 2008-2009 GMS Finalist FAQ (where it answered some questions)

It answered some questions that some people on here had:

I am a finalist, does this mean I will receive the scholarship?
No. You have advanced to the 2nd phase of the screening and selection process. Once we receive the requested documents, we will determine your eligibility. Nominees who meet the the eligibility criteria are also assessed by academic achievement, community service, and leadership potential. You will be mailed a letter no later than April 15, 2008 an will be advised of your status at that time.

I have not decided on the college I will be attending. Do I have to send you an admissions letter from the institution I decide to attend or can i send you what i have from other institutions?
If you have not decided on the institution you will be attending, you can send us any one of the admissions letters you have. However, should you be selected as a Gates Scholar, you must send an admissions letter and financial aid award letter from the same institution.

What is the deadline to submit these documents?
The deadline is April 11, 2008. You should submit your documents as soon as possible. Don't wait to send your documents all at once. Fax them to 703-205-2079 as soon as they become available.

When will i be notified of the GMS decision?
GMS will mail you a letter no later than April 15, 2008, and you'll be advised of your status at that time.

If I get the Scholarship, how much will I receive?
If selected as a Gates Scholar, the award will be based on the information provided in the financial aid award letter.

Then it talks about the eligibility requirements and I'm assuming most of you know what they are. Have to be a minority, a citizen or legal resident, a cumulative GPA of at least 3.3/4.0, will be entering college enrolled full-time as a freshman this fall, be eligible for a pell grant, and have demonstrated leadership.

I have a question for past scholars. How does GMSP meet "unmet need"? Will they consider the school's definition of "unmet need" or will they consider the federal government's definition of "unmet need". I'm asking this because my EFC is 0 for the FAFSA and my noncustodial parent is not considered. However, once we add him in, I predict that those private colleges will expect my family to pay around $5,000 or so. Does GMSP cover that?

And gr. I didn't get a letter either... yet... hopefully.

I'm still waiting...maybe tomorrow will be the day?!
