Gates Millennium Scholarship - 2008-2009

wow 4 months? i wish i had taken that much time, i know i would have done way better but i did mine in a week or so...
congrats to u dotunogunbajo!! which organization r u under? AA, hispanic, APIASF or native?? could u plz tell us ur stats? ur community service, leadership, ap classes, gpa?

All these stats! lol well i'm AA but i'm African. 6 AP's, 3.75 GPA Key Club, NHS, Mock Trial, and a whole lot more.

what about leadership? i only have 2, im scared that i won't get it..AAHHH

I had like 5 becos i'm very involved but i pray you all get it!

dotunogunbajo congrats! I know how it feels to work on those apps. I spent two months to really put my heart into my application.

Looks like AA are the first ones to be contacted. I hope Asians are not last to be notified again.

i think asians were the last ones to be contacted for the finalists...i hope we get notified soon...
im losing hope :(

Don't lose hope yet. Gates Scholars are just starting to get notified now, but that doesn't GMS is done notifying everyone. The due date for supplementary materials isn't even until April 11 (although it would be wise to send it in ASAP), so of course, you still have a chance.

When I got the GMS a few years ago, I received my letter on April 1 (I thought it was a cruel joke, although the letter was dated March 29). I know a bunch of my fellow scholars from that year who weren't notified until well into April; I'm talking people who were also selected as Horatio Alger National Scholars, Ron Brown Scholars, and other national scholarships. The scholar notification process has just begun, so give them some time before you give up hope. Do yourself a favor and ease your mind by continuing to apply for other scholarships. ;)

YAY! I WON! I'M A GATES SCHOLAR! Hispanic from California!

COngratulations Aladdin!!!!!! do you know how exactly this works?

wow 60 pages, it seems like only yesterday that we had 55, wait it was, I guess all the excitement and anxiety got to everyone

61*- even more pages

Congrats Aladdin!

I think you're the first non-AA to be notified.

Is that correct? I don't know if I missed something with all the new pages.

aladdinAWNW -

Please post your info. When did you send your papers in? What is the date on the letter? Your stats? Thanks and CONGRATS!

congrats aladdin! no asians yet...
i just finished everything day b4 yesterday so i won't hear from them until next week (i believe)...idk...i wanna win it but it is soo hard...does anyone know how many finalists were chosen?
Yeah proudhusky, im applying to other scholarships also!

Ok I have got to stop looking at this forum, because the more I look the more anxious that I get, specially since I am also a Hispanic Finalist from california, and in fact from really close to where HSF is located

oh yes i agree w/ u mosvalublpelayo cuz more i look here, i lose more hope. even though im not hispanic (im asian), im really anxious to know if i won or not.
i should be working on my senior thesis statement instead of reading this forum but for some reason this forum.............

Came home today and ONCE AGAIN there was nothing in my mailbox except for bills and advertisements. I just want a freaking notification. The wait is rather annoying, especially since my friend who goes to the same school as me was already notified of his rejection. And I mean, COME ON, it's March 27th!!

HOW RUDE haha.

rejection of not being a finalist or not being a scholar??

WHAT I'VE LEARNED FROM MY PACKET: I've only read everything once, lol, but my general understanding is that they will pay for all unmet need and replace self-help aid (i.e. loans and work study), but you still have to pay your EFC (reasonable!). oh, and they don't pay for summer terms unless you're graduating undergraduate during the summer. also, i think there may be [very reasonable/understandable] caps on the amount they award you in grad school.

WHEN I TURNED THINGS IN: I turned in my completed application about 3 days before the extended online deadline and so did my nominator, and my recommender turned in everything like 2 days before the deadline. I was notified that i had passed onto the second round march 10. i sent in all my materials for the second round March 14th. i sent it to the hispanic scholarship fund in san francisco. i got my packet today in the mail in a fat envelope from the Hispanic scholarship fund, it was sent yesterday apparently (march 26th). i had called and confirmed my stuff on the 20th, i think, and they said they had everything, but then i got a phone call yesterday at 3:30. someone called and said my file was incomplete and i told them i had confirmed it already and they double checked and voila!!!

MY STATS: you know, a huge reason why i applied to this was because it focused on character and not numbers. i think that's something everyone here should realize. i don't have a laundry list of extracurriculars that only APPEAR impressive, i have TWO awards for my entire time in high school, i'm not a part of an honor societies or anything like that. i believe i distinguished myself from other applicants by being very accomplished in an extremely different way. i spent SO MUCH TIME on my essays. each essay was rich with anecdotes, and were all threads i wove together to explain my passion in life and what i've done to make myself ready to do something in the world. and yes, i am purposely being ambiguous about what these thing are. i may elaborate on this, if the right questions are asked. my recs were phenomenal, too.

i've had unique experiences in high school. i valued the experiences, and gained recognition from my peers and teachers. no superficial badges/awards of recognition were involved
