Gates Millennium Scholarship - 2008-2009

that's really good aladdin....i didn't put that much effort in my essays and that's why im losing my hope. :(

Congrats Aladdin! So I guess so far 3 people from CC have won the scholarship for this year. I hope more to come in the future!

oh, and thank you everyone for the congratulations :)

i wish you all the best of luck

Congrats aladdin - What city are you in? I was figuring that I haven't gotten notification because HSF is in CA and I'm in NYC, but where are you?

i'm about 20-30 miles away from the city of san francisco

That explains it. I'll probably get a notification by Monday then. Thanks Aladdin!

Aladdin, congrats on getting the GMS!! I couldn't agree more with what you said about GMS being more about character and leadership than stats. I am fairly certain that is how I was selected as well since neither my grades nor my test scores were never singularly spectacular.

I should add too that self-help includes, not only aid for your work-study and loans, but additional funding for one laptop or desktop computer during your time in college as well as study abroad programs--including funding for airfare, food, housing, other program costs--during the academic year (just not summer unless you need remaining credits to graduate during the summer before senior year). Basically, if you have educational expenses, you should talk with a financial aid counselor at your college or university, preferably the GMS point person, and make sure those additional costs are included on your tuition statement in order for GMS to cover it. You are allowed one revision request per academic year in case an unusual circumstance comes up during the year (i.e. you're accepted to a study abroad program in the middle of the year).

Also, if anyone is still wondering, GMS does not officially release the number of finalists that are chosen. I asked the folks I know at GMS and they said that you should just know that the process is extremely competitive and that to be chosen a finalist (second round) is an achievement in itself. The best thing to do if you're selected a finalist, they said, is to submit your materials ASAP so your application remains competitive though it sounds like everyone on CC who was selected a finalist submitted their documents right away.

One final note...I am not entirely sure how their scholar notification process works, but I do know that letters are sent out at different times, in some cases, even if two applicants submitted their materials on or around the same day. Gates Scholar notification letters are not all sent at the same time, so although I hope you all hear back soon, don't worry if you don't hear by next week either.

wow man this is so....dsjdfhjf
i havent gotten one single thing from them
i like in southern california...close to los angeles....and i havent gotten one single thing!!!!!!!!
any one else in the same situation??

Congrats Aladdin! After reading your inputs about the criteria of the GMSP, I really feel assured. My stats aren't the greatest, so I'm relieved to hear that they look into character and leadership qualities!

Today's mail came --- Nada...

Oh well I guess tomorrow is another day!

fRANKY I'm in the same situation.
Latino, from Southern Cali.

For anyone who cares, here's the good news: They received the info that my school sent last Tuesday!
The bad news: I feel like I'm basically the last one to have his forms processed :-p

If only if only if only... crosses fingers

I called HSF and they said they will be releasing results 2 weeks after the submission deadline. I think they were lying though, as hispanics on CC have already been notified.

Yeah, I think they release notifications on a rolling basis.

Received nothing in the mail today. I get so nervous now whenever I am opening my mailbox!

Me too! Today I checked the mail and there was a huge white envelope with the back facing toward me. It took me a good minute to summon up the strength to turn the envelope around. Sadly it was a college info mailer. Damn!

did anyone else receive phone calls from them telling u to send ur stuff?

Nope. But that's only because I sent my stuff in the day after my notification. If you haven't sent your stuff in yet I suppose that you would get a call.

wait a second....even if they havent sent you any notification wat so ever...are u supposed to send your stuff in and by stuff i dont know wat that is lol

Again. NOTHING in my mailbox.

No. If you haven't received notification of Finalist status then you should continue to wait until you do.
