I hope everyone that deserves it gets the scholarship as well. If someone's efc is 0, that means they don't have to pay a dime right?

JHovah08: That depends if the institutions meets 100% and their financial aid packages. Some institutions will meet 100% but some of the aid will be in loans and while others disregard loans in their package.

My name is John (kinda obvious lol). I am freaking out now because someone on the west coast already received their package. I just hope that a miracle will happen...

Thanks John!

I'm going to have to read the Gates packet thoroughly because I know I read somewhere in the packet that Gates will pay for any work/study and Perkins/Stanford Loans.

You guys can call me Lee (my nickname)

Are you a finalist John?

Yeah. I am still eagerly awaiting that notification. :(

so am I ... so much hope is pinned to that one large envelope. sigh

to those who have gotten it, can you guys fill us in on what the envelope includes?

has anyone called them and asked about the scholars login?
yes, yes...ONE LARGE ENVELOPE!!

John, if you're a finalist it is very likely you'll get it. The only reason why you wouldn't get it would be because of putting down a false GPA, false AP classes, and other dishonest things. Other than that, sit back and relax.

To be a finalist is a great accomplishment. It means you shined through your essays and leadership.

And the documents you have to send as a finalists, just confirms the classes that you put in your application.

Feel better now?

Lee ... as far as I recall, last year there were applicants who were finalists for GMS...but they did not go on to become scholars even though they had an EFC of 0 and also had not lied about any other things (as far as we were told...).

It comes in a big envelope. And a special Gates Millenium Folder with your name on the front. It opens into 3 folds. There's a certificate with your name on the left side of the folder, and in the middle it's the official letter congratulating you as a scholar and behind it has indepth information about how the scholarship work. It also comes with a financial aid booklet, for you and your guidance counselor to use when you determine how much money you need based on what the school is already giving to you. Then there are 2 forms for your guidance counselor to fill out, you should do it with him. It's about financial aid award and the school you plan to attend.

I'm pretty sure that's it...my packet is in my backpack. But I'm pretty sure that's accurate.

Electrequiem...

Maybe I am wrong. But it seems unreasonable and illogical for Gates to accept way more than the 1,000 guaranteed scholars. Especially when they are sending out notifications randomly...and the deadline is on the 11th.

Why would they just ask for your transcript, school profile, acceptance letter, and unweighted GPA form, instead of having us write more essays to determine who we are personally? Get what I'm saying?

Okay.... my name is Yan.
I am an Asian from the South.
I still have not fax all my stuff in yet. Waiting on my financial aid award from Emory so that I can fax it in.--- I need to verify my citizenship status...although I am a US Citizen!!

I thought there are 13000 finalist and only 1000 are a scholar. It is impossible for all the finalist to be scholar

i hope that u r right Lee!

Yan, how did u come up w/ 13000 finalists?? i thought this many ppl actually applied and no one knows about the exact number of finalists chosen.

people say that there are 60000 that applied. 13000 got finalist and 1000 are scholar

Hey Yan,

No, in my letter it said the Gates Scholarship attracted over 13,000 people, meaning 13,000 people applied. They didn't release the number of finalist but I'm sure it's closer to 1,000 than it is to 13,000.

I'm Cambodian...Southeast Asian

Are you a finalist yan?

arrg i faxed everything on the 17th and still haven't gotten anything yet....they also took 8 days to respond to my email...

oh i called about the scholar login and they said that its only for people who have been selected as scholars. I still don't know why the lady gave me one even though i haven't gotten anything yet...

Whoa. Someone from California received their packet on the 31st? Am I dead or what? =(

I'm a scholar, my login and password didn't come in the packet, nor did it even mention anything about a username and password...unless I overread it...

is anyone here from texas?? im gonna start panicking this weekend if i don't get my notification by friday! can't wait...

Hahastupidme...

Hey..are you a finalist? If so, when did you send your things in?

I think that whenever you send in your documents play a role in when you will be notified as a scholar. As I was reading the forum, I believe 2 people from CC, sent their papers either the day of or the day after of mine and we all receieved our scholar notification with the postmark date of march 27th...
