ethanrt, I'm kind of in the same boat because GMS won't cover EFC. I plan on discussing it with my schools to see if they will decrease my family contribution and instead make it something that GMS can cover. My FAFSA EFC was 0 and I'm not asking the school for more money, so I hope it works in my favor.

There is no need to panic yet and YOU should not have to do anything, except asking your school to fill the GMS forms correctly.

Ethanrt's assumptions are incorrect.

While GMS does not cover your FAFSA EFC, the difference between the Federal EFC (in reality there is only thing called EFC and that is the Federal one) and the figure computed by your school as Family Contribution should be reported as an unmet need. Unless they made a drastic change this year, GMS does cover ALL unmet needs. The real purpose of GMS is to eliminate the unmet needs at various schools and allow all scholars to pay exactly their computed EFC, not the Profile or other mumbo-jumbo schools come up with.

In general terms, and except for schools such as Brown that insist of not waiving the summer earning expectations, nobody should pay more than the figure on your SAR (that is the Federal EFC.)

PS For students who are 100% funded, GMS does (or used to) have a minimum payout.

UNDERGRADUATES

GMS scholarship awards will be allocated based on the following self-help items identified on the financial aid award letter and the GMS Information Sheet (if required):

 Work Study (Federal and Campus)
 Federal Perkins Loan
Federal Stafford Loans (Subsidized and Unsubsidized)
 Federal PLUS Loan
 Health Professional Loans
 Alternative/Private Loans
 Unmet Need

Xiggi, I was assuming that what the each university expects your family to pay wouldn't qualify as unmet need?

I guess I was wrong, and if that's the case, I'm happy to be wrong!

I thought it was:

Total Cost - Expected Family Contribution (determined on an institution-basis) = Total Need

Total Need - Scholarship/Grant money = Unmet Need (covered for by GMS)

***Edited:

I've re-read the GMS info packet, and I'm pretty sure what I wrote above is correct. Expected family contribution, even if it varies from the FAFSA Student Aid Report EFC, does not qualify as unmet need.

Guys...so pretty much the amount of money you will get will depend on what your financial advisor puts down on the form, right ... AFTER she takes into account all the things that the University is already offering you? And what is the "personal expense" based on?

Speak Easy, are you quoting from official GMSP documents?

Such a change in calculating the unmet need of students would be a drastic one, and not in line with the objectives of the Gates Foundation. It would send quite a wave of disappointment among the current thousands of scholars.

The definition of unmet need is pretty standard and GMSP has not changed it in the past years.

Speak_Easy, I was wondering the same. How do we calculate our personal expenses (books, meal plans, housing, etc.) into the unmet need portion?
