I really think you're in a good standing if you're a finalist. The only reason (unless you really suck at life, JUST KIDDING) you wouldn't get the Gates Scholarship is if you don't qualify for the Federal Pell Grant. In that case, you might be on the fence.

But just know--things will work out the way they're supposed to. :)

I got my packet on Friday!!! I'm from Houston, Texas and I sent in all my materials priority mail after I faxed it and it was confirmed on the 25... I am AA!

I don't really think that getting lots of money should be a deterrent for the scholarship. I sent them an NYU letter announcing my $25K merit scholarship because I thought it would let them see that I had enough strength as a student to receive such an offer. And wouldn't GMSP be happy to pay less? "I guess the flip side would be that they prefer to give scholarships to kids that need more help... but I don't think having merit scholarships is a valid reason to pass over someone. Any opinions?

Wow...that's FOUR Cambodians that I know of that are Gates Scholar :)

Congrats to everyone that became Scholar!
Here's an official group that you guys can join: Login | Facebook

And to the soon-to-be Scholar: Don't go panic-mode yet. I will be willing to bet that most of you guys will be so happy this Monday. And I would not worry about it unless it's after April 11. Give it a WEEK. Then I would go into panic-mode. Try to enjoy your little bit that is left of high school. Like I said in the earlier post; THERE'S NOTHING YOU CAN DO NOW. Just relax and whatever happens, happens. I know it's hard...trust me, I've been through it all...but all you can do now is wait...patiently. And I hope to see all of you all at the conferences :)

to all the new scholars, after the confirmation of ur docs, how long did it take for them to mail the packet? I mean if u confirmed ur docs on 20th, how long did it take after that for them to mail the packet?
Thanks and congrats to all the new scholars!!!

Re Hahastupidme: It all depends on which fund you were part of (Asian, AA, HSF, etc).

As for Gates... I actually have some kinda disappointing news: its terms seem to make it pretty superfluous for good schools :-/

Compare:
1) Princeton: Says my family has to pay $0; covers the rest and lets me use scholarships to annul most of my contribution.

vs.

2) UChicago: Says my family has to pay $15,000. Won't cover that no matter what.

From what I've read (and please post input if you interpreted this differently), GMS will honor the college's decision about "what your family can pay." At a time when many good colleges without the funding of the elite schools claim to meet 100% of your need but often under-assess that need (sometimes dramatically - e.g. factoring in total home equity like Georgetown does, which we all know is ridiculous but happens anyway), money-wise Gates is really just a nice thing to say you won.

That being said, I really want to see if I can accept the scholarship and just get them to disburse $0 each year. The other aspects of the scholarship - e.g., mentoring and funding for grad study in specific fields - should not be passed up lightly.

Asian, faxed everything on the 26th of March...and just came home to find the elusive large, white envelope stuffed rather crudely in my mailbox.

ARGHHHHHHHHHHH YESSSSSSSS!!!

Hope EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU OUT THERE GET IT TOO!

I'm a Scholar! Congrats to everyone else who found out today.

I'm so happy/excited!

:) !!!

ethanrt, I'm kind of in the same boat because GMS won't cover EFC. I plan on discussing it with my schools to see if they will decrease my family contribution and instead make it something that GMS can cover. My FAFSA EFC was 0 and I'm not asking the school for more money, so I hope it works in my favor.
