Hi, I’m deciding between a few schools right now and I was wondering if any current Northwestern students (especially lgbtq+ students) could shed some light on gay life at NU? I know given our age group and current year the vast majority of ppl are accepting, but I’m applying out of a small LAC and one of my big issues is the tiny gay population, how big is the gay community at NU?
Since no one has responded, I suggest you try to search on Reddit. That said, according to Niche, the student body is pretty liberal. Here’s the breakdown:
Progressive/very liberal 11%
Liberal 60%
Moderate 20%
Conservative 2%
Not sure 6%
That’s not surprising considering most top schools are pretty liberal. NU has very good performing arts programs and they tend to be very liberal.
It’s pretty good! I was out when I was there, and I had a lot of good gay friends. Hard to know for sure, but it probably doesn’t hurt that Northwestern is strong in musical theater and music, both majors that attract gay men at least.
The proximity to Chicago also helps tremendously, and being on the north side of downtown means you can take the El to Boystown or Andersonville. You don’t be bored!
