hi everyone,
I applied to Northwestern early, and I'm anxiously waiting for the results. the school offers everything I want and I would not be happier to attend. I'm curious, though, how LGBT friendly Northwestern is. I go to a small, very accepting high school in Massachusetts and so coming out for me was a slow and pleasant process, and recently I officially came out as bisexual. How visible is NU's LGBT community? I've heard about the Rainbow Alliance, are they a definite presence on campus? Which dorms are especially LGBT friendly? How often do you hear homophobic remarks being made?
Thanks!!

Well, I’m also an applicant, but I know that the theatre scene on campus is huge, and obviously, gays make up a large portion of the theatre kids. I also know two gay guys at Northwestern, and they’re so totally happy.

I have a family friend–mid 30s–who is either lesbian or bisexual and raves about Northwestern.

Sorry if that wasn’t helpful, considering the information is anecdotal, but there’s my two cents.

I am a gay male that attends NU and I have never had ANY problems. Granted, I am in the theatre community and so everyone is extremely accepting but there is definitely a huge LGBT community on campus and everyone (for the most part) is extremely accepting.

I have to run but let me know if you want to know more.

Jones and ISRC are the two most gay friendly, traditionally.

“… I know that the theatre scene on campus is huge, and obviously, gays make up a large portion of the theatre kids …”

LOLer bill, y’all.

FYI: Chicago has a huge and vibrant “gayborhood” in Lakeview; there’s even a community center. [Center on Halsted - Chicago’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Community Center](Your Page Title)

I’ve seen the Rainbow flag flying under the NU flag in that flagpole by Norris…not all the time because that would give the group too much of a special status but usually during Rainbow festivities or one time, when the campus got attacked by some outsiders handing out anti-gay flyers.
