What is the gay life at CMU like? I'm trying to decide between UCLA and CMU and gay culture seems to be a lot bigger at UCLA although I guess part of that is because there are so many more students. I posted a thread in college life about being gay at UCLA vs. CMU and a bunch of people chimed in for UCLA, but no one has yet said a thing about CMU. Is it practically impossible to get a date at CMU? I guess maybe Pitt students are a possible option.

I mean, there’s the school of design, school of drama, and half of CFA. Take your pick of (mostly) gay men. … No, but seriously.

I was the manager of an editorial staff at a campus publication last year, and every single guy on my staff was gay. Gay culture seems to be a pretty big but little-discussed thing at CMU. I think it’s probably because there aren’t many queen-y gay guys hanging around. Most of them seem to prefer to be quiet about their sexuality and tend to be less active in things like ALLIES or gay pride events around campus. There is an active ALLIES chapter, of course, but it’s not really what it might be at UCLA or some larger school. The environment here is really friendly and supportive, though.

That aside, one of my best friends here is gay. He’s currently got a boyfriend and had no trouble finding dates before that.

And yes, Pitt is always an option.

Yeah, I’m going to be honest. Most of CFA is gay. CMU is very welcoming to all types of people and if you’re a good person you’ll find a date. Plus, Pitt is right around the corner.
