I heard that W&M is a really liberal campus. I've also heard that it has a large (openly) homosexual community. Is there any truth to these rumors? If so, could someone describe to what extent they are true (examples of related student organizations, activities, awareness days, etc.)
Thanks in advance!

I don't go to W&M so I wouldn't know what the extend of the 'scene' is, but I think you'll find this article presents a very encouraging picture of the attitude, especially of the staff, towards homosexuals: http://www.wm.edu/news/?id=5342.

I just asked my d, who graduated last spring, and she agrees that the acceptance level on campus for gay students is high - also that the gay students on campus are open about their sexuality. However, she doesn't think it's necessarily a "large" community.

Gay student groups on campus: GSU (Gay Student Union), Wilma & Mary ... there may be others. Also, the women's rugby team, of which my d was a member, was about 50% lesbian.

Interestingly, the Greek community is accepting of gay members. For example, there were 3 gay members in d's boyfriend's frat, which had a very politically conservative (borderline wacko) leadership. My d was also friends with a girl in a sorority who came out as bisexual to her sisters during Gay Awareness Week - and half of them showed up at a gay event that week to support her.

My d feels that gay students will certainly feel comfortable at W & M, but they don't constitute an especially high-profile campus group.
