Is William and Mary gay/lesbian friendly?

replies appreciated :)

This topic has come up on the board before, and the answer has always been “yes.” Being gay/lesbian is not a big deal at W & M. There are a few student organizations to support gay/lesbian students (Lambda, Wilma and Mary), but above and beyond that, W & M students are an inclusive bunch. Couple of data points: my oldest d’s (now blessedly ex-) boyfriend was kind of an extremist reactionary jerk, but he had no problem with having gay guys among his fraternity brothers. And when a friend of my d’s came out as a lesbian to her team members and sorority sisters, they attended a Gay Awareness Week event in numbers to support her. I think that gay students would find a comfortable atmosphere on campus.

I agree with frazzled1. The community is welcomed and welcoming.

Thanks, good to hear.

Sorry if I missed this topic (frazzled1) before… I’m forum-challenged.

Ooops - hope I didn’t sound negative or disapproving. (I’m forum-challenged, too. ) Just wanted to bolster what I was saying about the atmosphere on campus for gay/lesbian students, since I’m not a student and people reading what I said might wonder “how does she know?” I hate those forums where posters say “If you’d done a search you’d know the answer,” which seems to defeat the whole purpose of discussion boards.

ooh, I see. I was worried that you were a bit annoyed with me.
Your stories are helpful, so W&M student or not thanks again for posting.

As a current student I can tell you that the community is very inclusive of everyone. We elected a “gender queer” (zere’s [I think that’s the right pronoun] description) student as homecoming queen and the LGBTQ community is very active on campus.

WisM is definitely gay friendly =)

I’ve got an openly gay roommate and suitemate and multiple gay kids on the hall. No one has a problem. Generally I’ve seen acceptance from everyone. If anyone has a problem, they’re either not voicing it or they don’t know. It’s gay friendly

Agree with everyone else. W&M is a very tolerant and open community and the students, faculty and administration support each other.
