Hey everybody! Here's the gist. I have good grades, lots of depth in ECs, etc. Now, because I'm gay and from Minnesota, I am a bit of a minority, I suppose. How can I get the perspective this has given me across in an essay?

How does being gay, what is this… I don’t even…

Gay is not a minority because it’s pretty much impossible to check if it’s true, and when reporting diversity they look at race, not sexual orientation. Minnesota might qualify as geographical diversity (and give you an edge) for some schools where the state’s underrepresented.
Unless you’ve been active in GSA or have had some major event that relates to growing up gay in Minnesota, it might not be worth mentioning at all.

Sure it may be a slight advantage in admissions, but there really isn’t any clear way to get this across in an app. It would be hugely innappropriate to send pictures with another guy (NOT SEXUAL ) as evidence, and squeezing it into an essay seems desperate. Unless there is a sexuality box added to the app by the time you apply, there really isn’t much you can do. Now if you want to make the leap and fit it into your essay, go ahead, but I think it’s a very slippery slope.

I think it’ll be bad as the person reading the resume might not like the idea that he’s gay (hey it’s possible).

Being gay does not help with admissions whatsoever. That would be like saying the fact that I date a hot cheerleader would help me get into a good college.
