So I'm majoring in Chemistry at ERC. Then i find out that ERC has all these GE requirements. how does work? how am i supposed to fufill my major, while at the same time, doing visual arts requirements, math, and a bunch of other irrelevant courses. someone explain this to me

oh another thing, VISUAL ARTS? I have to take music or art or theater? What if I suck and can't sing and act? how do i escape or avoid this?

Did you know that ERC had all these GE requirements before you put it as 1st/2nd/3rd choice? just wondering...
Anyway, you are probably just going to have to take a full load almost every quarter and/or take summer classes if you want to graduate in 4 years. Also "math" isn't really an irrelevant course if you are majoring in chemistry, you should have no problem fulfilling that requirement.
Also, a lot of the fine arts classes from my knowledge do not require you to do/make art...it's more just the study of art. So there shouldn't be a problem if you are not naturally gifted or anything like that. And it's only 2 courses anyway!
As for the other requirements....if you've already taken a language in high school, fulfilling the language requirement really shouldn't take that long. You can also pass out of that requirement with 700 + SAT II in a foreign language, or a "qualifying AP or IB score" whatever that means.
the quantitative methods/formal skills and natural science you will already complete with your major.
the regional specialization is 3 courses....guess that's something that you can't really "pass" out of.
then it looks like you have to hand in a paper from an upper division lit class.
So really, it's just the MMW sequence that will take a lot of time...but hey, at least you will be a better writer/reader/thinker after taking it. And ERC is probably the best college to study abroad just b/c a lot of its requirements (language, region of specialization) have an "international" component to them.
and if you go to ERC and realize you just can't stand it, you do have the option of switching colleges. To do so I'm pretty sure you just need to show that you will graduate at least 2 quarters sooner in the college you want to transfer to than the college you are in right now.....if anybody knows differently please correct me on this. Granted, not many people end up switching colleges...but it's not impossible...

well come on. i had muir as my #1 choice and im stuck in a college that requires me to do MORE than what i am supposed to...the GE's are totally irrelevant to my major (although some DO apply) but its still ****ing me off

More than what you're supposed to? You're in ERC and a chem major. What you're SUPPOSED to do is the ERC GE requirements and the chem major requirements. You're not entitled to be at Muir for any reason at all. You're not entitled to have less GE requirements just because you want to take it slow. As I've said over and over again, you are not entitled to anything. Don't like it? Go to a different school.

If an employer asked you to stay afterwards to help someone else with their project, would you whine to him about how all these bad things always happen to you and you're not SUPPOSED to help the other person do their job?

Anyway, I know someone in ERC who did a double major in math and engineering (which has WAY more requirements than other science majors) and finished in 4 years. AND they didn't even whine.

jakesrevenge, i totally feel your pain... i put muir as my first choice but actually got in ERC, which really contains the second-hardest GEs...i want to swtich colleges, but seemingly this is impossible.

seriously, stop whining. erc has the best campus hands down and is the surburbia of ucsd. if ucsd was san diego, erc is la jolla. if u live in san jose, ucsd is san jose and erc would be like, i dunno. almaden. or palo alto. stop whining and man up. you're gonna be in the best setting in ucsd. muir looks like a prison. and it's also almost always busy cuz its surrounded by revelle ppl going to class, marshall ppl going to class, and everyone going to and from price center. u wanna be a chem major? tough it out. half the people in erc are bio or chem majors, so its not like you're the only kid whos gonna be going through all the "extra ****". dont hate on college before you even get there. its tough yea, but its gonna be the most fun u ever have. stop whining.

as in people? I know 3 of my suitemates out of 15 that are going for econ majors. One is switching to management science or something like that though.
