GE vs Elective?

Hi,
What is the difference between a GE and an elective please?
I thought they are the same :)

i would like to know this too

In the sense that I’ve heard them, it depends on context.

If someone is talking about a class they’re taking simply to fulfill a GE requirement, most people will consider that a GE. I suppose you could consider it an elective too, but I can’t recall hearing anyone refer to their GE classes as electives.

If they’re taking a class for fun/interest but it doesn’t fulfill GE or major requirements, or they’re already done with their GEs, that’s an elective.

Alternatively, your major could have a listing of courses where you only need to take a certain number of them. Using computer science as an example:

There’s more to that, but you get the idea. These would be considered major electives.

As far as when you hear it in general, when someone says GE it only refers to a class that fulfills those requirements. If they say elective it could be either the second or third meaning.

Great, thank you PhantomVirgo. That really clarifies things.
So FRS are electives? they go as units towards the degree but they are not GE and not major related? is this a correct way of looking at it?
Also, beginning photography is not a GE and If I take it and I am a bio major, then it is an elective?
Am I on the right thinking?
Thank you so much

In the sense that I’ve heard it used, you’ve got it. Administratively I’m not entirely sure how they’d consider it, other than the fact that they go towards your unit count (which is the important thing, right? :))

PhantomVirgo, thank you, finally that question is resolved.
Several people answered it so differently.
Very nice help, much appreciated :)
