i’m entering davis as a freshman in the fall of '09 and am planning to be a bio major. i was lookin at the major requirements on the davis site and understood a lot of the info on there. however, i dont understand the GE stuff. my friend is takin random classes at ucla over the summer and told me it fulfills his GEs at UCI. so my question is how many GEs do we have to take? is there a number of credits we have to fulfill? and does it matter which classes we take to fulfill these GE requirements for different majors? this probably is a stupid question, but i have no idea…

GE’s are the same idea for everyone (i believe. i think some major has to take like 32 instead of 24 units but i cant remember. this is all on the UCD site), and going over them is kind of what half of orientation is about, so dont fret about figuring it out urself.

herez what i have for an engineering major:

you are in one of the 3 colleges (sciences, arts and humanities, social sciences)

you must take at least 3 classes in each of the other 2 colleges you are not in. totalling to 6 classes and 24 units (4 units each).

(any) 2 of these classes must be upper division.

also, you must take
3 classes that have a writing requirement (W)
1 class that fulfills the diversity requirement (D)

you are allowed to double/triple/quadruple dip
in the course catalogue it will tell you at the bottom of each course description what it fulfills (ie Arts and Humanities, Writing, Soci-diversity)

one more thing: AP CLASSES MAY NOT BE USED AS GE UNITS
they may be used to fulfill reqs, and you will get all the units, but u can not say that u took History 17 as a SS GE bc you passed the APUSH exam or w/e.

i think the writing requirement is needed for everyone (a separate one). u can pass out of it with a 4/5 on APEL/APL or 600+? on the writing portion of the SAT. or by taking one of several classes they list.
there is also an upper division writing req, that you can either pass out of or take a UWP 100+ class.

like i said, itz all online! and orientation. no worries.

^^i just copypasted that from another thread

thanks for all the info. what are some easy/fun GEs to take at davis? im tryin to figure out what i should take over the summer at a CC
