Gen Chem and other science courses at NU

What are students' general experiences with the intro science courses at NU such as Gen chem, introductory bio, physics, and orgo?

Do the professors deliver the material well, or is it a lot of self learning? Thanks!

gen chem hard (ppl start to drop the class like flies), bio harder (more are weeded out), physics (depends on prof) and orgo - ridiculously hard and only the really smart ones left by this point. If you are brainiac you will be fine.

^That is not the experience most people have at all.

Gen chem hard.

Orgo insanely hard.

Physics/ Bio easy (comparatively). Most of the weeding goes on in gen chem and then orgo.

Gen Chem isn’t that bad of a workload and you don’t learn that much, but it is hard to get a good grades because it is a weed-out course. I haven’t taken orgo, but I’ve heard it is a very large workload, but if you put in the time, you should be ok. Don’t expect to get an A, but pulling off a B isn’t that hard.

Ignore NYerr. He spends his time in the NU subforum misleading everyone

i have taken every intro class:
heres the deal:
In every class, they teach well, thats not the problem, they move really fast, and you have to put a lot of hours outside of class to master the material.

Every class is going to be really hard to get As. Think of the most hellish 10 weeks of your life to pull of an A, at least in gen chem and orgo.

Bio and especially physics are more doable.

Orgo is the hardest class ever, you will devote your life to it, but, it is possible to get an A is orgo (ive done it twice so far). Usually the people who get Bs just didnt have good enought study habits.

Speaking of study habits: its all about study habits, coming into the school, there were so many kinds who thought they were hot property, and didnt study as hard. And then there were the kids who thought they were not as smart and studied really hard. Its funny that the people who thought they couldnt make it are now getting As and the kids who thought they were smart enough to slack off are now econ majors. The lesson here is that its NOT going to be about how smart you are but about how much effort you put in. Take is from me, i havent gotten a B in a science class here ever.

Is it a bad idea to use AP credit to take Orgo freshman year? I know Orgo has a reputation for being extremely hard, so I have some concerns about taking it as a freshman.

It’s not a bad idea, per se. You just need to be very serious about it and not goof off.
