At Northwestern, what is the science scene like? Are the classes extremely difficult? Is the science, specificaly, bio/chem departments well renowned? And...how is the competition at Northwestern if you are in science as a premed?

anybody...?

I can't help you on that as I lived in a shelter life as a chemE major at NU. LOL! The chemistry dept is very strong (ranked 12th in the nation), so classes can't be too easy. Organic chem is pretty tough.

I've been waiting for an NU student to answer your question, but they're probably not going anywhere near their computers since they're on spring break! I can give you an answer based on what our daughter, a biology major, has told us. At the beginning of the academic year, she told me that "everybody" at NU was pre-med. This changed after the first quarter when some of the pre-med majors decided to switch when they experienced the chemistry classes. Our daughter still hasn't taken a biology class -- she will start taking them next year. However, all of the students are extremely helpful. It isn't a cut throat environment which is something that I was worried about. Our daughter also mentioned that the organic chemistry class at NU is supposed to be the most difficult in the nation (?) and that many students take it during the summer so that they aren't distracted by other classes. The students are dedicated though - Kayne West gave a concert at NU and students stood in line for hours to get tickets. Many of those same students didn't go to the concert and ended up forming study groups and staying in their dorms when they found out that they had a chemistry exam the day after the concert.
