General, Banking, or Insurance

Hey guys, I'm an Accounting and Finance major at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. This Fall I will begin to take classes in Finance, and I wanted to know what area of Finance (general, banking, or insurance) would complement my Accounting degree and be applicable in the work place.

Also, I'll be spending an extra semester in school to get 150 credit hours to be eligible to sit for the CPA exam. Should I pick up a minor or just take classes I find interesting? Do firms have any sort of preference?

Thanks in advance.

Accounting won’t go particularly well with the insurance concentration because insurance accounting (in the workplace) is very different than what you will learn in school. I would go with the general focus if I were you because Nebraska is not know for its strong banking presence. And no, an extra minor won’t add anything to your credentials. Just take classes in things you find interesting.

“And no, an extra major won’t add anything to your credentials.”

True in most cases. But, a finance degree combined with an accounting degree definitely distinguishes your resume in a general sense. Because he wants to go CPA, the finance double concentration might not do much however.

What would my options be if I was to forgo the CPA and just graduate with a Bachelor’s in Accounting and Finance?

Your job prospects are much lower and less numerous without CPA/CFA certification.

Honestly…how can you take a direct quote from someone and change a word around? He said a MINOR.

That is an awfully subjective statement. How do you know? Do you have experience in a professional work environment and/or HR work?
