Are minors worth it for majoring in accounting?

They can give you some exposure into other areas. What classes are required for your business minor?

Im just a freshmen i was talking in general, like wouldn’t the time spen’t getting a masters or a double major be better. Im more interested in the finance field so far i can’t say for sure though since i haven’t taken them in depth. But a minor just doesn’t really seem that appealing to me. Also, i have been investing since i was like 15 in the stock market. So far CPA and CFA seem like something i’d be interested in. Anyways, i don’t know why i just wrote my life story on this forum like everybody else but ya, lol.

I don’t see a ton of value in a minor in something like business. Only a handful of minors really stand out to me as adding tremendous value (relative to their ‘minor’ status). To me, foreign language minors hold the most weight. After that it would probably be MIS, Math, and Finance, but you start loosing value in a hurry.

I don’t see the point in a minor unless it is a specialized field. If you want to take classes outside of your major because of a general interest, then I definitely suggest it though.

Also, it sounds like the CFA is the credential that would fit you needs, not the CPA as much (unless you decide to go into public accounting).

Whenever i’d browse the finance jobs on cg a lot of controllers, cfo’s all want cpa’s or mba’s, so it seemed to me that being a CPA is not just for public accounting. But also can be useful for some finance positions.

Definitely true. But, you said you have an interest in the stock market which is completely different than the accounting world/controller/CFO jobs. They require non-related certifications, in general.

CPA is definitely a need for a CFO/controller job. CFA is perfect for valuation and investing.
