Hi, first time posting on this board. I was just wondering what the general feel at BU is. Is it Liberal? Conservative? I’m also wondering about how the actual city of Boston is like. I’ve heard it’s almost a smaller, classier, and more cultured New York. Is this true?

I was also wondering if the BME program is geared more toward actual engineering, or simply a gateway to med school. Personally, I am more interested in the engineering.

Thanks!

Liberal with a capital L. I love Boston. Very welcoming, navigable, and exciting, especially for students. Opportunities galore. Great sports. Sweet music scene. Excellent shopping (and no sales tax!). Never a dull moment. Etc Etc.

Don’t know much about BME.

You just made me so happy. That’s exactly the type of environment I want. City life, but still restrained and without the traffic and insanity of a big city like Manhattan.

it’s exactly as described above haha - it’s picturesque and always busy, with an urban vibe but still kind of old school with alot of museums, galleries, and historical sites galore. however, there’s shopping in abundance from high-end luxuries to thrift stores, tons of restaurants, side-walk vendors, chinatown, koreantown (harvard sq), basically any type of food you could possibly want, i’m sure you could find here. the people are very liberal, and always look busy, but if you stop and ask for directions in passing they are more than generous to help you along your way

of course, there’s the college city life! with harvard, mit, tufts, neu, simmons… all a stone throw away, you will never NOT be able to find something to do! there’s constantly events going on for college students, so don’t worry about being bored!

im only a junior but this school is sounding more and more alluring!

BME is either the #7 or #8 program in the country. it is highly reputable and is definitely geared towards engineering rather than pre-med (though there is a program called engmedic where biomedical engineers get accepted to bu med their soph year). BME is difficult but rewarding from what i hear of my friends in that major. one just got accepted as a grad student to cornell. i can’t give you any specifics, only anecdotal information.

Awesome. Definitely going to apply here next year. Seems like it’s shaping up to be my top choice.

Anybody know about how much financial aid BU gives out?

Both need-based and merit-based. And how good you need to be to get a merit-based scholarship.
