Hey everyone I'm a TCNJ undergrad business major. I know it's a bit late for this year but with two weeks left many of you have a major decision to make. If you have any questions at all I'll try to answer from my experience or find you the answer. I am a business student and I'm involved in SGA, so I'd be happy to answer questions about those specific groups as well as .student life. I'll try to be as honest and informative as I can.

I just have a few if you don’t mind…

I have been accepted as a finance major and was wondering:

How are the internship opportunities

How involved are the professors

Are there a good number of business organizations on campus

Thanks a lot!

The internship opportunities are very good despite the recession. Accounting is definitely the strongest program for this, but even finance marketing and management usually have more internship opportunities than students to fill them. Recently students have interned with the big 4 accounting firms as well as corporations like J&J and Merck. You may not necessarily get the internship you want without the extra legwork but you’ll be able to get one. If you’re looking to summer intern at a BB than it’s gonna be a lot of work, but Big 4 and certainly middle market firms should be no problem.

The professors are very involved. They are frequently in the building with their office doors open, and many are doing their own research. Many professors also advise student organizations such as future business leaders and DSP, the coed professional fraternity. DSP is very popular among business students for its focus on business mixed with a social brotherhood.

I hope this helps let me know if you need anything else.

i have myself down as an accounting major but i have no idea if that is what I want. I want to know why the only majors at the TCNJ business school are only accounting and economics. Everything else is just a specialization like finance marketing etc. This worries me because I would think a company would want to hire somebody with a major over a concentration. I also may decide I want to switch into biology and I heard it is very hard to switch into biology at tcnj. I am deciding to choose between TCNJ and Rutgers and I feel like Rutgers will offer me so much more options and flexibility but I love the campus and size of TCNJ.

The other business options (Finance, Marketing, Management, and International Business) aren’t concentrations, they are majors, the difference is simply a B.S. vs a B.A. Employers understand this and I’ve been told by people who hire students out of colleges with these degrees (two bank SVPs, a major pharma manager, and a corporate controller) that it doesn’t make a difference in hiring. You should really think about the feel of the school before deciding, I chose TCNJ over a full ride at Rutgers because I knew I’d be much happier in my four years here. I’ve found the following to be accurate:

As far as bio goes, it is one of the few programs which will require you to apply, that is you can’t simply change your major into bio. Because it is a more competitive and selective program, you must meet certain requirements. If it’s something you are or may be serious about pursuing give a call to admissions, I’m counselor will be happy to discuss your options with you
