I have some questions to get the feel for college/dorm life.

Is it really as dangerous as people say… like people getting held up at gunpoint/knife point?

Do dorms supply you with a TV?

If you bought one, could you get cable?

Do dorms have internet for you laptop?

And would they know/ would you get in trouble if you downloaded like music or something?

answers to your questions really depend on what college you are planning to attend. each school has its own policy regarding tvs, cable, internet access, microwaves, refrigerators, in-room phones, etc.

College security varies considerably. Most colleges take security seriously. Colleges need to do mandatory reporting and you can check out the statistics: http://nces.ed.gov/ipeds/cool/

Most colleges have TV's in the common areas and many students do not bring personal TV's.

You will need to check with individual colleges. Most do not have cable and if available charges are high.

Dorms have internet access but some charge for the connection. Many are now wireless.

Yes. The record industry continues to push schools to enforce restrictions on downloading. All schools have policies about illegal downloading. They can monitor internet use and are being pushed to restrict illegal activity.

Well I don't live in my college dorms, I live in an on campus apartment. But I know that cable and internet are free at our college's dorms. I am disturbed however by the several incidents of crime I hear about in our campus newspaper, such as one incident of assault and several incidents of underage drinking and marijuana possession.

underage drinking and marijuana possession are not "dangerous" crimes, at least i assume the OP is asking more about like murders, rapes, assaults, etc.

Any place in the world can be as dangerous as you make it, just be smart and you'll be safe anywhere you go.

here are the answers for Bennington college....
1) I've actually never heard anyone call college that dangerous. anyways, none of that here.
2) No, Ive never heard of that either.
3) I have no idea. There are no cable hook ups in the room though so I doubt it.
4) Yes.
5) No.

Not at all my campus is very safe.

In the lounges yes.

Yes always supplied.

Yes.

I download all the time- so far nothing has happened.

Is it really as dangerous as people say... like people getting held up at gunpoint/knife point?
I think that would depend on the school & it's location, but I believe that most places are pretty safe. I feel comfortable walking around alone in Davis at night.. crime here is pretty low.

Do dorms supply you with a TV?
Again, it probably depends on the school. I had to bring my own tv.

If you bought one, could you get cable?
My dorms did provide cable tv, and even had a movie channel

Do dorms have internet for you laptop?
My dorms did provide cable internet for computers - and I think almost everyplace you go will - internet is an essential in the college life

And would they know/ would you get in trouble if you downloaded like music or something?
Oh yes they will.. many people in my dorm got thier internet cut off for illegal downloading of music and movies. If you download it legally from like itunes or something, then you're fine.. it's just illegal downloading.

No, the campus is relatively safe and I haven't heard about many security problems. I don't think anyone here feels that it is dangerous.

No, TVs aren't supplied. I don't believe any college does this.

Yes, individual rooms are equipped for cable for a monthly fee. The price is reasonable and the channel selection is adequate.

Yes, dorms are equipped with high-speed internet access, which is free. There might be a wireless network also, but I have never used it.

I don't know for sure, but I haven't heard about any problems.

Personally if I visited a college and they said you have to pay for internet, I would not go. If they are behind on technology what else are they behind on?

How do you know that they're not so far ahead, that they need to charge because of how much it costs?

Case Western has the fastest internet connection of any college and one of the fastest in the world... Free
I checked out some websites... you have to pay 50bucks a month to get 100kbps upload

Just get Yahoo! Unlimited.. it's like $5-10/month, that way you dont have to worry about doing anythign illegal.

and yes bittorrent is illegal, it irks me when epopel say "oh, i use bittorrent, i wont get caught".. HELLO? the companies can set up drone seeders.. when you ar ea peer, you connect to the seeders.. with your IP address. dun dun dun, you'r enot invisible

"Personally if I visited a college and they said you have to pay for internet, I would not go. If they are behind on technology what else are they behind on?"

People are pretty naive if you really think you are getting these services for "free"...you do pay for it in a combination of your room and board charges and your student fees each semester. Sometime if your school breaks down the costs in your student fees you will be flabbergasted in what you actually pay for each semester (for example: I'm a grad student and I have to pay x number of dollars each semester for the cafeteria worker retirement fund...hmmm...I never use the cafeteria....#2: there are normally "technology fees" which of course cover internet and campus printing supplies). The same is likely true of cable hookups in dorm rooms...you pay for it somewhere (maybe discounted..but pay for it...).
