question about television

this might sound really stupid, but do a lot of freshmen have TVs in their dorms, with access to cable and such? I was wondering because I realized that life without TV for about a year would be really strange--but then again, it's just one less distraction, right?

I'm not bringing one but in most schools they tend to gather around the TV's in the house lounge.

I think I will be bringing a VCR that I will attatch to the video-in on my graphics card in case I need/want to watch a tape or hook up other A/V gear.

Besides, I only watch desperate housewives and the daily show and I have my computer set to download the daily show every night after it airs (I dont have comedy central).

Dont put a TV in your room just as you shouldnt study on your bed.

To an extreme, try facing your desk opposite the window and your bed so you wont distracted by the outside world. Haha very extreme.

lol ok thats a bit much. From my experience, most people have TVs in their room. Personally, I have a TV tuner in my computer that I like very much.

It really depends on the school... at mine there are no cable hookups in any student rooms, and strict rules about satellite. There is an option to get cable in the common room of apartments, but it is not supplied. There are TVs in residential lounges, but I hardly even have time to watch.

Every room in my hall has a TV except for mine (I'm in a double). I think my roommate might have expected me to buy the TV because he brought the fridge, but I never did. TV blows and you are better without it. When you need to watch a movie or TV (as in Family Guy this Sunday), go to a friends room.

nearly everyone here brought a tv, we have cable hookups in the room.. but those who didn't just watch tv in a friend's room or the lounge

i could have dealt without it, but a lot of people like it to relax

I have Tv on my laptop.

Vinny: I bought the TV card thing to watch TV on my laptop, but I tried hooking antenna up to it so I could watch TV at work, but it didn't work. Do you need to have cable to make the TV tuner work or will it work with an antenna(how?) It said on the box it would work with antenna.

I use the my Home satilite. I just plug in the Coax. thenw ehn i go away to school at U@B next year I can watchit on my laptop..

Ive never tried an Anteena what model fo you have.

Its an ATI model, I am sure it will work with coax, but I just wish I could get it to work with an antenna so I can watch it at work. I might buy a digital attenna because that would probably register.

I never brought a TV b/c I knew it would be a distraction. Oddly I don't miss it and I watched a lot over the summer. It's surprising how fast you don't miss it. I find it a waste of time really. Sometimes I'd like it for games tho b/c not being able to watch the games in my room sucks but luckily I dont pay too close attention to sports and just like the news I can get my info online now.

I could never go without tv.

I mean dahm. school work only takes on average for me 20 min a day and the essays and stuff. But what about the other 10 hrs a day when not sleeping if you dont work.

and BTW i dont read anything. So that is maybe why I have time.

You definately could go without a tv, you just havnt tried it.

Personally, I sincerely hope that my roomate does not insist on bringing a TV. It will just distract me when they use it and take up precious space. Movies can be watched (and usually look better) on the computer and the daily show can be downloaded :)

The lounges are perfectly good for everything else,

You don't want me as your roommate then. <--- TV addict.

Sorry to say, but I need to catch my share of shows.

Actually, I don't watch all that much TV. Just CNN, News things, a bit of good old shows like the Simpsons, Married with Children, etc.,

Yeah I used to watch a ton of TV senior year, well really all of high school. But I cut it down. I dont even watch it much when I go home anymore. Just like pop. You cut it out of your diet and your craving for it goes down.

I have to have my games.....but I guess I could just watch them in the commons.

yeah I just go watch them with friends. But sometimes I have to do hw too and that's when it sucks.

vinny, what software/product/whatever do you use to watch tv on your laptop? I know it can be done with h/w inside a desktop, but have never seen anything for a laptop.

In any case, for the OP, wait to see what you roommate brings to school and how much space, if any, that there might be for a tv. College if different than hs and there just isn't much time to watch tv during the week.

I study on my bed AND have...well had...a TV in my dorm....didn't hurt me the slightest...maybe i'm just one of those ppl that can't not study on a bed...i've tried a desk but it just doesn't work :p
